Fresno Area - 1980s - Foodland Chain
Does anyone know about the history of the "Foodland" chain in the Fresno area? I am curious if it was connected with other "Foodland" stores elsewhere in the U.S.A. (such as in Hawai'i). I stopped at one in the Fresno area in June of 1981. It was somewhere in the State Route 180 ...

Re: Los Angeles-1960s-Supermarket on La Brea Avenue-Mentioned in 1965 Picture "The Loved One"
After re-listening to the dialogue, I've determined that the movie character (Mr. Joyboy) refers to "the Food Giant supermarket, the one on La Brea Street." Presumably that was a real supermarket in the Los Angeles area in the early 1960s.

Pleasanton, Calif.-Safeway Store Locations
There have been at least three Safeway store locations in Pleasanton, Calif. (which eventually became the city where the Safeway headquarters were located): (1) 749 Main Street (source: "Oakland Tribune" advertisement, January 1963) (2) Santa Rita Road/Valley Avenue - opened mid-1960s, clo...

Los Angeles-1960s-Supermarket on La Brea Avenue-Mentioned in 1965 Picture "The Loved One"
In the 1965 picture "The Loved One," the character Mr. Joyboy refers to "the giant supermarket, the one on La Brea Street." See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOMm86R_67w Does anyone know if that was a reference to a real supermarket? I assume that he meant La Brea Avenue in Lo...

Safeway-Vancouver, B.C.-Kingsway & Knight Street-c. 1966
The British Columbia Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has digitized (digitised, eh?) some of its "photolog" series of photos of its highway system from circa 1966. One photo appears to depict a Safeway store pylon sign along Route 1 at Kingsway and Knight Street in Vancouver. See: ...

Pon Honor Nickel Splitters-1920s Oakland Area Chain
"Pon Honor Nickel Splitters" apparently was an Oakland, California area grocery store chain in the late 1920s. See: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10158501532320488&set=gm.4157752317663659 Here is a location map in the Oakland/Berkeley/Richmond area circa 1926: https://www.facebo...

Re: A WV Texaco conversion in 3 pictures
That's a great idea, to study high school yearbooks/annuals for the business advertisements (esp. ones with photos of the business). I rescued a 1941 Irvine, Kentucky high school yearbook/annual from a recycling bin in California in 2021, contacted the current historical society covering Irvine, Ken...

Re: Safeway locations-Oakland, Calif.-1963
The "Oakland Tribune" of September 16, 1964 has an article about the opening of a new Safeway store building at 6310 College Avenue in Oakland (intersection of College Ave. and Claremont Ave.). That building was used for the next 49 years. It was demolished in 2013. A new Safeway store bui...

Sidney, Montana-Safeway store-Marina style-opened Oct. 1963
Sidney, Montana is a town on the Yellowstone River near the North Dakota border. Apparently that region is known as "Mon-Dak" due to its proximity to the Montana-North Dakota state line. A Marina-style Safeway store opened in Sidney on October 14, 1963. It was located at 2nd Avenue and 2nd...

CBS-TV's "Captain Kangaroo" on Evolution of American Supermarkets: 1955 to 1981
I just discovered a humorous commentary of the evolution of U.S. supermarkets from 1955 to 1981 by none other than CBS television's "Captain Kangaroo." See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HqNMRJ1Qqw Watch from 7:18 to 12:50. This was a skit that was part of a 25th anniversary primetime t...
