Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida

I'm curious how many Publix Markets with the exterior front "wings" on the façade still operate as grocery stores (Publix or other) or as other uses. For those unfamiliar with the design, it was quite distinctive and recognizable at a distance. On many of the stores the wings, and to some ...

Re: Atlanta History Solicited

Here is a portion of an advertisement that originally appeared in The Atlanta Constitution, 2 April 1939, (reprinted in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1 July 2004) showing that Kroger operated/supplied the Piggly Wiggly stores with Kroger brand products at least at that point: http://farm4.static...

Re: Dominion Name Starts to Disappear in Ontario

While looking at several ads on Flickr pages I ran across this one for Dominion stores (as featured in Better Living magazine, June 1953):

Re: Red and White

I ran across a nice 1950's Red & White advertisement photo on Flickr recently at:

It references a series of ads that ran in Life Magazine. Note the flirtacious look of the cashier!

Re: Dixie Home Early History

The Athens, Georgia Dixie Home store was on Prince Avenue...quite small...and survived as a Winn Dixie until it was replaced by a new build in the Homewood Hills Shopping Center around 1970. I forget what the location is used for now, but at one time it housed an Asian market and maybe a medical sup...

Re: White Cross

Add the White Cross store at Holly Hill Mall in Winder, Georgia to the list. It operated fro a few years and then became a Revco sometime in the 70's, IIRC. The location is currently a Dollar General Store. I only recall one Gray Drug in the Orlando area...I believe it was off of John Young Parkway ...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

... In 2001, Borden sold off their pasta business to New World Pasta (formerly the pasta operations of Hershey Foods Corp.) which streamlined their brands. Many of the brands - Prince, Creamette, Goodman's, Ronzoni, and San Giorgio survived the merger, but it does not appear Gioia did. Sale of Bord...

Re: Stouffer's Restaurants

Atlanta had at least one location downtown. I believe it was on the street level of the Cotton States Insurance Building...at least alive into the late 70's and maybe even later. Since that building was relatively new, it is possible that it was a relocation from another downtown site. IIRC, Stouffe...

Re: Sears sign oddity

A mall near me in Atlanta was recently redone and Sears put that exact same logo back up. We have a Sears nearby testing the retro Sears signage, so I'm wondering if they are considering doing this whole market in that signage instead of the lower-case signage and so put the logo old back up until ...

Re: Supermarkets in the Movies and TV

Plaid Stamps were given at A&P stores in Florida until the mid-sixties. THere was a stamp redemption store immediately next to the A&P in PineRidge Shopping Center in Cocoa, Florida. It seems like the redemption store closed around 1965. It was at the same time that Publix stopped giving S&...

And yet another Union 76 Ball will die, too? This is doubly sad.

Re: Restaurant and fast food photos, Princeton WV area, 1987

... The building is obviously an old Kentucky Fried Chicken store from the 1960s or 1970s : Just imagine red and white stripes on the roof and a rotating chicken bucket.... Actually I'd imagine that building might even have sported the pinkish-tan and black livery that Kentucky Fried Chicken used B...

Re: Mystery Shopping Bag store somewhere in OC

I can't offer any real help since I'm not familiar with the area and don't have access to local libraries, but if YOU do have such access to local research sources including city/real estate directories, it might be helpful to checkout the address for that restaurant which appears in the extreme rig...

Re: Roger's Grocery - and a Rural store

I don't think it is the same Rogers...stores they operated were usually not that small and did not get down into North Florida when the Rogers name was still being used IIRC. If you're looking for other types of signs to use for a period store of that type, also consider snuff and chewing tobacco, e...
