Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on
Nice photos.
There were also versions with wheels similar (identical) to metal roller skates. There would be several in each row.
Those things made a ringing noise like a choir of bells. A train wreck of a choir, but...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on
The odd thing is I remember the conveyor roller system in several supermarkets, but I can't name a specific example to save my life. Typically, they rolled on a downward slope the length of the check stand row. Clerks would put the tubs on the belt, give them a good shove, and let gravity do the res...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
Speaking of dog foods, what about Blue Mountain? They had a "Chicken, Liver & Egg" dinner that was literally divided into three distinct parts when you took it out of the can, just like Neapolitan ice cream. There was a dark meat part, a lighter meat part, and a bright yellow egg part....

Re: Burger Chef
I ate at Schroeder's just a couple of weeks ago...I stop there anytime I go through Danville. That store was originally Burger Chef #57 and was one of the most successful in the chain. The Schroeder family has owned and operated the store since it opened as a Burger Chef in 1960. The interior is lat...

Re: The Pop Shoppe
The Pop Shoppe used to sponsor the "Ramblin' Rod" Show on KPTV Portland...a locally produced kids show. They had a bleacher full of kids, with Rod coming out on a "boat" to the right. Basically, Rod cut promos and held contests between old cartoons, much like other local cartoon ...

Re: Before and After Remodel Photos
Correct. But Those ARE Albertson's interiors, and that was the main point here.In Des Moines, Albertsons never built a store. They took over the former SuperOne locations and remodeled them.

Re: Harmon's, Your Neighborhood Grocer
I don't think they've ever had "supercenters" ala Fred Meyer. Jake Harmon's original store was more of a one-stop shopping type deal if I'm reading their history right...but today's stores are typical of the large modern supermarket format. They have big stores to be sure. The new decor th...

Re: Before and After Remodel Photos
One of our local Dahl's moved from their ages old location into a nearby abandoned Albertson's that has that interior (I believe Albertson's called it their "Marketplace" interior) and didn't change a thing, save for add seating for a cafeteria area. And losing the huge rotating meat guy. ...

One chain that was rather oddly dispersed until recently was Mervyns. Their operations were mostly in the West, but they did spread out to Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, as well as a handful in Michigan and Minnesota (the MI and MN stores evidently a result of Dayton-Hudson acquisition). The Minn...

YIKES. Is that (2201 BH Hwy) Raleigh Hills? That's a RADICAL change from what that store looked like in my Oregon days. The entrance was at the middle of the building, not on the corner. Grocery was on the south (back) end divided from the store. Home improvement was in a separate building behind th...
