Pre-CVS drugstore in Oxford Valley Mall?
Would anyone know if the Oxford Valley Mall (Langhorne, PA) had a drugstore of some kind at some point before the now-closed CVS? The CVS didn't open until around 1990, and closed in 2008; almost every other mall in the area had some kind of drugstore from the beginning (in this case in 1972-73). Fo...

Re: Old Supermarket Mystery Hazleton, PA
Articles on Google News Archives list this as being an Acme; it converted to Insalaco's in January 1995. There was also another Acme in the Hazleton S.C. at 530 W. Broad St; that one closed about six months after the acquisition by Insalaco's/ Penn Traffic, and is now a Save-A-Lot. There was also an...

Re: Did Cheltenham Square ever have an A&P, Acme, Food Fair?
Looking on HistoricAerials.com, you can see the Acme at about where the Home Depot is now; it doesn't look like it opened into the mall (although in the 1971 picture the mall wasn't enclosed yet). A while back I found an article on the closing of the Stenton Ave Shop N Bag in 1996; in the article it...

Re: Genuardi's locations in PA
Thanks so much for the info; I've tried looking for the book online, the only place they have a copy is in the St. Joseph's University library. This will really help in my travels (I had no idea there was one in Yeadon!).

Re: A&P to close 25 stores.
Also the Broomall, PA Pathmark; the one article said three in the Philly area, but I only count two so far (Bristol and Broomall). There are consistent rumors about the Super Fresh stores in Blue Bell and Lansdale however; these are two of the three remaining former Clemens stores bought by A&P ...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
Acme #1558 was located at 1305 West Main Street, Norristown, PA. There was another Acme #1755 but the only address I have is W. Germantown Pike, Norristown , PA. Wow, so the current U-Haul building on Main St was originally an Acme? I always thought it was the original location of the first full-si...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
Thanks again for the info; I hadn't been to historicaerials.com before. It really is amazing; it even looks like the A&P had a Colonial front at one point! I also discovered that the Acme at 6601 Roosevelt Blvd in northeast Philly was actually a newer construction; the Food Fair that was origina...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
Thanks for the King of Prussia info; Bed Bath & Beyond makes the most sense as the Food Fair, although looking at it from bird's eye view it looks like it was expanded on the right and the back over the years. So if Michael's was the theater, what would the Marshall's have been? Is that the W.T....

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
I've been confused for a while with the Valley Forge Shopping Center in King of Prussia; I know there were at certain points an A&P, a Food Fair (which coexisted), a W.T. Grant, and the Eric theater. I've been told so many different things as to what used to be what. Currently there's the Bed Ba...

Re: Centennial A&Ps "reconstituted" as Super Fresh
The CVS in Pottstown actually does have a drive-thru; it and the older one on East High St relocated the same year (1999). The High St store actually was 24 hours even before it moved, one of the first in the Philly area. There's also one in North Coventry outside the mall; they're trying to move to...

Re: Possible former Food Fair
I believe I may have solved the mystery; the Rite Aid/ True Value building looks like it was a W.T. Grant. Compare it to my picture here of the W.T. Grant in Pottsville, which also used to have an Acme a few stores down (now demolished for a Weis): http://www.flickr.com/photos/62355920@N00/429483959...

Re: Acme Pottstown PA, 1964-????
The state stores, at least the one in Easton, have been called "Wine & Spirits" as long as I can remember, going in with my grandparents in the 80s. Royersford and Pottstown are actually pretty nice; I've never had any problems there even downtown. I might have a different view however...

Re: Acme Pottstown PA, 1964-????
The Acme closed a long time ago, around 1991-92 according to a Morning Call article I found online. At some point the Acme building was demolished, and was just an empty space until Redner's built a brand new store in 2003. I'm not sure if anything moved in post-Acme and pre-demolition. In between t...

Re: Oldest Operating Acme Stores
I had found an article about Flourtown history at one point (I think it was a book excerpt) that said the Acme in Dresher opened in 1952. Sure enough, I can't find the article on Google anymore; I wonder what random combination of keywords I typed to find it, haha. Regardless it's definitely pretty ...

Re: One-of-a-kind A&P
There was actually a gap between the Aston Eckerds; the first one that was near Shop N Bag closed in 2000 when Eckerd was closing a large number of their stores. At some point after they were owned by Brooks they decided to try a store in the area again, with the Five Points store in 2005. That stor...
