Edric - do you ever sleep? By the way, I also recall Safeway out on the Island - I believe that it was in Great Neck.

Edrick - you made my day. I am beginning to think that between you, me Turbo, and Jeffrey55 we all need help. However, yes, I clearly remember it being a Great Eastern Store.

King Kullen Supermarkets had their own brand of beer as well - New York area. Back in the 1960's it was Little King Beer - but in the early 70's they dropped the Little King idea and simply called it King Kullen Beer. If I remember correctly, we also had two types of beer.

Do you really care if they consider you a wacko? More to the point, if a newspaper owns it, they have undoubtedly dealt with a lot more genuine wackos. On the other hand, it's more likely that the local Buildings Department would have information in their files -- possibly documents showing previou...

Dear Turbocsx:
Greetings from Cleveland. The Food Fair building was the smaller of the two. It may still have that escalloped awning which served as its entrance. Billy Blakes was left of the Food Fair building. I believe that it became a church or something. Good luck with the photos.

Re: Woolco

Anyone remember them? They were Woolworths' attempt to compete with Kmart. The only one I can remember was at Point West Shopping Center on Arden Way in Sacramento. I believe it was later a Weinstocks Furniture Gallery and/or Clearance Center. I'm not sure what's there now, although there's a Circu...

Nostalgia, pure and simple. The want of a better time. I used to stay home with mommy and go to the grocery store with her during the summer. Now I work, 9 hours a day, 5 days a week grumble grumble... Even today I simply love walking into supermarkets with a look as though I were searching for som...

Re: Hill's? Hill's-Korvette?

When we moved to Junction Blvd. in Queens in 1963, on the dividing line between Elmhurst, Corona and Rego Park, there was a Penn Fruit supermarket on the ground floor of the Lefrak City housing development. (The store must have been only a couple of years old, because I think that first section of ...

They were never national. They probably reached their maximum geographic coverage around the early 1960s, unless you count their forced merger with the the remnants of Colonial Stores in the 80s. Any details on this merger? What I've read is that it was first announced in 1978, immediately followin...

Super Duper was a coop supplied by Flickinger, which was acquired by one of the bigger wholesalers (Fleming, I believe), during the 80s. They had stores as far South/West as Columbus, Ohio during the 60s & 70s. Super Duper products also turned up at small chains and independents in Cleveland th...

Re: billy blakes

they are before my time, but i know of 2 that used to be on long island. 1 in middle island, which after it closed, it remained empty for years. in 1 section-anchor bank had a branch, and next to it the public library was located. the 2 stores took up maybe 20% of the whole place. the store was dem...
