Re: 1970s superstore-era Kroger store interiors?

Earlier this month I paid a visit to the Big Lots store in Princeton, and managed to sneak in a couple photos of the still-intact '70s Kroger interior decor without anyone noticing: Not a small feat indeed, when your camera happens to be a manually-adjusted SLR! To quote from that article again: &qu...

Kroger (and ex-Kroger) stores in southern West Virginia

I recently decided to photograph a few of the older Kroger stores in my general area: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/andrewt3660/kroger-princetonold-sm.jpg To begin, here's a picture of the original storefront Kroger on Mercer Street in Princeton, WV. This store was replaced by a more modern...

Re: Kroger Superstore newspaper article, 1972

Heh, thanks! I've always had a soft spot for the Kroger superstores myself, in all their understated '70s brown-brick glory. I hope to share some more photos of those "earth keyed" interior elements soon! Come to think of it, early superstores tend to have an shorter arch overhang (not qui...

Kroger Superstore newspaper article, 1972

While going through some microfilms at the library today, I came upon this interesting article in the April 27, 1972 issue of the Charleston, WV Gazette : "Kroger to Expand Service With New 'Superstores.'" One thing I find interesting is that the article states that nearly as many expansio...

Re: The first store that got me interested in old supermarkets

I'd attribute my interest in supermarket history chiefly to two stores. One of them is the Kroger superstore in Hinton, West Virginia, which I vividly remember shopping at once in the mid '90s. Although the interior had been remodeled, I was intrigued by some of the older decor details that persiste...

Re: "DISCO KROGER" to change formats.

Without knowing better, I'd think the "Disco Kroger" was some perfectly-preserved '70s superstore with pergola frames over the produce, shake siding and orange windows over the deli, and danceable R&B/funk music pumping out of the speakers overhead. I wish... In all seriousness, the &q...

Re: Restaurant and fast food photos, Princeton WV area, 1987

Hi jimbobga, Excellent set of pics from that era. I really enjoyed looking at those. What's missing is the Kenney's at the intersection of WV 20 and Thorn Street, but it's possible the restaurant was closed by then. The building still remains, however, and the last time I was there it was a used car...

Re: Older Kmart interiors (orange and otherwise)

Thanks, guys. Some stores still sport 1970's/1980's signs. Diamond Bar has an old "garden center" sign adjacent to the Purrfect Auto Center. Somehow, it seems that the blue/white "Garden Shop" exterior signs have some of the highest survival rates of any vintage Kmart miscellany....

Re: Hills

I miss Hills: They used to have a large regional store presence; particularly in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Hills was bought out by Ames in 1998, who soon converted and reopened all the stores under their own banner (thus explaining the lack of labelscar). This proved to be the end of bo...

Restaurant and fast food photos, Princeton WV area, 1987

Here are a scans of a couple pages from the 1986-87 yearbook from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, showing photos of a number of restaurants and fast food joints in the immediate area (click for a larger image): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/andrewt3660/restaurants87-01t.jpg http:/...

Re: Old Dairy Queen signs

There used to be a Dairy Queen in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan with an interesting backlit roadside sign consisting of a red circle containing "DAIRY QUEEN" in squared letters and a cone protruding at top. Unfortunately, it was replaced with a more modern sign around 2000 or so (although to ...

Older Kmart interiors (orange and otherwise)

Today, I found myself waxing nostalgic over the issue of Kmart interiors. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/andrewt3660/kmartorange.png Once upon a time, 'tis true, practically all stores had these orange - painted walls. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/andrewt3660/kmartorange2.png http:...

Re: Older McDonald's Locations

Incidentally, I visited Huntsville for a hobbyists' convention last summer and saw that McDonald's. I was definitely impressed by the vintage sign...even though the fact that the restaurant it was in front of was a lot newer threw me for an instant! I love how they covered up the "15c" des...

Oh, gee! Sorry to hear about that...

I did like your response letter, though; especially the last three paragraphs. It might be interesting to see the person's facial expression while reading them.
