Re: Woolco
Long time since this thread was replied to, but does anyone know where Woolco was in Nassau County (LI/NY) aside from East Meadow and Jericho (both of which were Great Eastern locations originally)? I figure there had to have been a few more scattered around but I can't seem to find much information.

Re: Two Guys Discount Stores
There were also a few out on Long Island (NY). New Hyde Park started out as Grants, then went Two Guys, Channel, Bradlees, now it's Stop & Shop, and there were a couple scattered around Suffolk County. In addition there was one in Lancaster PA (Roherstown Rd @ Columbia Ave). Became Jamesway, the...

* Clearmeadow Mall in Clearmeadow, NY: a former Great Western->Woolco that was cut up for a small mall anchored by a Stop & Shop and Service Merchandise, now gutted for a Walmart. It looks like some of its inline tenants included Gap (!) and G&G. Great Eastern :) It indeed was a dinky indoo...

Does Suffolk county have a tax assessment website where you can do lookups? Might be able to find the information you seek there (what the property was originally).

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning
I'm glad this thread hasn't been left to die. Thanks for the IBM pics. The 3684 looks like what Safeway had in this area until the early 90s or so. Some stores had the green display like in that picture, while others had an orange display. I *think* the difference between the 3683 and 3684 might be...

Aha! Finally found those pages I referenced. Apparently they're all on NCR's Japan website. Another photo: NCR 280: http://www.ncr.co.jp/library/register/pic_2/09_pc1970_1.gif More to peruse...translated with Babelfish so it may be broken English but probably good enough to understand 1970-1978: htt...

That one's from a Publix article on Pleasant Family Shopping. I don't remember the pole displays on them when stores around here were using those.

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning
Is there anyplace online that has pictures of some of the 1980s-era registers (particularly NCR and IBM) mentioned in this thread? I did quite a bit of searching with not much luck. Kind of long to be rehashing a dead thread, but I saved some photos from NCR years ago when they had a pictoral histo...

Wilkes-Barre PA as well. Matter of fact PC just opened (last year) a brand new store right down the street from Wegmans there.drpep wrote:Wegmans and Price Chopper compete in Syracuse.

There used to be a Hills in Carle Place, NY here (right on the spot where the Waldbaum's parking lot is on the left): http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=qsrb9v8vygr3&style=b&lvl=1&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=21278045&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=...

Re: New York area: Billy Blake? Food Parade?
As for Modell's, according to a post I read elsewhere, it was originally started as a sporting goods store, then began expanding into a full-line discount store (including food) in the 60s. Eventually it merged with White's Department Stores and the whole thing went under, but the original founding...
