Re: Possible former JCPenney

CVS was supposed to put a store here but it was cancelled. It looks like they are building one across Brace Road from where NWL was. It is where Jack Kelmers used to be. I think the Super G/Shop and Stop on Brace Road at Haddonfield Road is still empty. I don't think ShopRite wanted that location. ...

Re: Dart Drug, Wash DC area?

Yes, I remember them. They did quite well. They also opened Crown Books and Trak Auto. Some of the drug stores also sold building materials. I remember one store with ceiling tile on one side of the aisle and wine on the other. They were not well organized. Because of the family bickering, they ende...

Re: Acme "eyesore" Clementon, NJ

I know this isn't much help, but it was open when I moved to the area in 1989, and is closed now. The Eckerd Drug store was open for a little longer than the Acme. I would say that the Acme closed closer to 1989 than to now.

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

There was an old IGA that closed and burned down years later. That was an empty lot for a while, and is now a Super Wawa. I think that is Route 30 and Franklin Street. Doesn't Camden County now own the old Grants? The only thing it has been since since I moved here in 1989 was an Acme/Eckerd/Flea Ma...

Re: Possible former JCPenney

I have what I think is a funny story about that location. When the WalMart people started peeling away the facade, the area behind it looked familiar. I asked one of the Petsmart managers who is pretty young if it was a Korvettes shopping center. She said "no, it was a Staples." I told her...

Re: JCPenney mall locations

From what I remember from my childhood (I am 60 now), JCP was about the last department store to go into the malls. So they probably took what they could get. About 15 years ago, they added on to the Deptford NJ Mall in the center behind the food court. I remember the stores in old downtown areas. I...

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

I would have to agree about the lack of remodeling. We had a store in Berlin NJ, and several cases were so old that they had incandescent lighting on them, and they had been repainted with some crappy enamel. They were older than the store, so they had to come from another location. Speaking of Berl...

Re: Old Supermarket Mystery North Wales/Montgomeryville, PA

I think the English Village was a Lohmann's Plaza at one time. I had a friend who owned a book store in the shopping center. One by one, the stores closed, and the whole shopping center was vacant. I don't know if they tore it down and rebuilt, or did a really major remodeling job.

Hechinger

Hello everyone. I worked at Hechinger from August 1974 until December 1999. I would be glad to answer any questions about former locations, etc. I worked in various stores in VA, MD, PA, and NJ. A quick history. Sidney Hechinger begun the company in 1911 as a lumber yard. (Actually he collected mate...

Re: Anyone remember Henry Versheren's grocery stores in Pitt

Wow!! Yes I do. I lived in the Pittsburgh area when I was in Junior High. I remember that Henry Versharen (not sure of the spelling either) found out it was cheaper to pay the fines than close on Sundays. Two other stores, Payday and Haines did the same thing, and were always in the news. A few mont...

Re: Acme in the DC area

I remember the one on Richmond Highway in Hybla Valley. It changed to a Super Saver, which was still owned by Acme. Acme closed all the DC area storesand I think it became a Dart Drug. I think it is a Shopper's Warehouse now.
