Re: 7-Eleven Stores (1980-Prior)
Anyone got any idea if this particular 7-Eleven corresponds to any known styles? I'm guessing it was a conversion of an existing gas station, but there's a possibility it might be an older style as well. It looks like a 60s-70s style Enco/Exxon station...according to the roofline, the service bays ...

Re: 7-Eleven Stores (1980-Prior)
Tempe has very restrictive sign laws (only street level signage for businesses), this sign was "grandfathered" in.
I remember 7-11 had an alternate logo in some areas..."7-11" in a rectangular sign with a rooster and an owl..was it a test logo?

Fry's in California - History?
Fry's is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year in Arizona (starting with 2 stores in 1960). What was their history in the Bay Area, and how did they end up opening stores in Phoenix?

Re: Stop-N-Go
As a former employee of stop-n-go I will state that what you discovered is another chain not related to them. National Convenience Stores inc. Houston Texas(owner of Stop-n-Go) was purchased by Diamond /Shamrock /Valero oil co. who still operate Valero gas stations with the Stop-n-Go markets brandi...

Anf the Wards in El Con Mall in Tucson used the blue block logo all the way to the shut-down of the Wards operation

Re: Phoenix - Remembering Smitty's
When Smith's entered the Phoenix market around 1990, Smitty's threatened the chain with legal action over the similarities in both names...yet both chain's operations were combined under Yucaipa's ownership in the mid 90s (Smith's rebranded the grocery-only Smitty's stores to Smith's, and Smitty's n...

Re: Fred Meyer gas stations signage
The diamond logo and plain-font lettering are being used by all of the gas stations operated by the various Kroger-owned chains (eg Fry's, King Soopers, City Market, etc) In Colorado, King Soopers fuel centers and Loaf N Jug use the same logo.

Metrocenter Mall in Phoenix.
The Macys store closed and moved into the former Robinsons-May location. So this store could have been demolished by now.

Re: Chveron Stations Operating as Standard Oil
There was a rather confusing "system" of signage of Socal/Chevron stations...dealing with the rectangular "fin" sign that included the chevron shield... Standard owned/operated stations used a blue fin with STANDARD and "Standard station" on the cap over the chevron. St...
