Saveway Super Markets

I stumbled upon this small chain while researching another chain. So I thought I would start a thread about it. Based out of Schenectady, NY, since the 1950's, they operated 18 stores in NY and VT when purchased by P&C Food Markets, Inc. in March, 1971. Saveway Markets, Inc. locations I found ar...

Re: Great American

NYSW, i have to believe I am wrong. No way was VM supplying anything west of Onondaga county, especially way out in the Buffalo area. Maybe the Waterville store was an ex-Victory, or a special deal, of else I am entirely wrong. I do know VM supplied area nursing homes and small general stores with ...

Re: Family Bargain Centers (New York)

Family Bargain Centers, Inc. locations I've found so far are these (41 of 49 with breakdown). They had locations in Ohio, but can't seem to find them... FBC = Family Bargain Centers EBC = Easy Bargain Centers SSM = State Street Mills MC = Mill Centers Amsterdam,NY (FBC) Auburn,NY (FBC- 2 locations) ...

Re: Family Bargain Centers (New York)

Know this chain very well. They actually were pretty good stores. Didn't know they operated that many location especially outside of NY. If you don't have them already, here are four New York locations: -Johnstown (currently a large Dollar Tree and subdivided into several other smaller stores) , -A...

Family Bargain Centers (New York)

Thought I'd bring this topic up as I've seen no other posts about this chain. Found out about this chain while looking for info on other stores. FBC had a short life, from 1957 to 1973. They operated mostly in NY, but had locations in PA, IN, IA, and VA. At their height of success, they had 49 store...

Re: Great American

Chenango County Historical Society might be able to help. The grandson of the company's founder, (W.H. Dunne) lives in the area as well. They might be able to find out. I do know the name dates to about the era you suspect. Larger market stores were changed to the GA banner, smaller markets remaine...

Re: Acme in New York

Acme was still in NY during the 80's. I was working for Kraft Foods in Central PA and in this area of NY state as late as 1994 and these ACME stores were all open then. Off the top of my head, I can remember Pen Yan, Hornell, Bath, and Watkins Glen.... all in NY state. All of them, at that point, w...

Re: Grand Union

I found an old advertisement from 7-17-1952 which shows that Grand Union had a location in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, it does not give a street address, but this advertisement lists locations in NY(117), CT(3), MA(1), VT(19), PA(6), and NJ(9). I should point out that this list is NOT ...

Corrections to this list are as follows: -Amsterdam-was a Chicago Market but also a former Loblaws and at one time was a discount operation of Chicago Markets called Bag 'N Save Ok, I remember in 1976 that both Chicago Markets and Victory Markets were purchasing former Loblaws. -Cooperstown-I seem ...

Re: Great American

Here is what I have. I thank all that have helped with this. This is just Victory's/Great American's/Peter Pumpkin's/Valu-Way's/former Chicago Market's/former Loblaw's. It should be known that Victory had 100 stores in April, 1929. Locations given with no street info indicates I just know there was ...

Re: Great American

Just an FYI...I'm currently in the process of separating Victory Market's, Great American's, Peter Pumpkin's, along with former ShopRites, Loblaw's, Genetti's, Oneida's locations, etc...to help make it more understandable. There are many missing from the current list on this topic. I plan to incorpo...
