Re: Sears Hardware, dead chain?
I just remembered another two: Warrington (former Acme) which opened 1995, and Morrisville (former Shop n Bag) which opened 1997. Both have newer signage now.

Re: Sears Hardware, dead chain?
Thanks for letting me know about that one. Because you just reminded me of a Sears in Coatesville PA (halfway between Philadelphia and Lancaster) that I noticed about a year ago. Ironically JCPenney had a small downtown store nearby until not long ago that was done justice by a new mall store in nea...

Sears Hardware, dead chain?
Is Sears Hardware kind of an orphan brand now? Like when Acme stopped using the Super Saver name, but kept Super Saver signs on the stores for a while? "Big" Kmart also used to mean something, but I guess it wasn't advertised well and too many stores (usually older Kmarts) sloppily used th...

Re: Levitz Furniture
Your PetSmart was an OfficeMax from 1989 to 2006. It still feels like yesterday to me when it closed. That was when the center first started to die the second time, so PetSmart moved in really quick. Not sure but I suspect either this or the Old Navy started as either Woolworth or Grants. I was worr...

Re: Hechinger
Well, I was in upstate New York a few years back and I saw a JCPenney from the 80's/early 90's in a shopping center next to a Wal-Mart/Walmart! The store did remind me of certain stores they were building in the 50's before they adopted the traditional department store model and malls caught on. Not...

Re: Levitz Furniture
I just confirmed that the Levitz clearance store right on the Pennsylvania-Delaware border (Tri-State Mall, Claymont, DE) closed in 2005-2006 during the first round of Levitz closings, before the end of the chain. That surprises me because their signs stayed up for quite a while if they are not stil...

Re: Circuit City
A couple of the very last Circuit City stores built were in Marlton and Sicklerville in NJ. I am not sure if the Marlton one was built as something else. But it was next to an old Two Guys. This space became a liquor store called Wineworks about a year ago. Sicklerville was a replacement for a store...

Re: Hechinger
I heard a rumor that the Downingtown store was originally planned as a one-floor JCPenney to replace the very old "J. C. Penney Co." store down the road in Coatesville. Instead, they built an addition to Exton Square Mall along with a new Sears, Boscov's, and food court.

How (no pun intended) was Mr Good Buys junky? I think all these types of stores sell things for hard work!

Re: Bradlee's/Caldor
There is no WAY Bradlees or Caldor were Kmart clones. Those three in particular seemed to like ex-JM Fields stores (owned by Food Fair/Pantry Pride) found up and down the East Coast. Bradlees and Caldor were a lot like urban department stores, but not always in malls/downtowns. They were not unlike ...

Re: Food Fair in Atlanta?
Well I can tell you that Food Fair seemed to hit a "depression" or "dark ages" period starting around that time. Union/labor issues were what caused the trouble. Their growth in the early-mid 50's was very rapid. They were ahead of Acme and A&P as far as growth was concerned....

Re: Food Fair in Atlanta?
This might not help, but remember Food Fair had a very strong presence from Maine to Florida for many years. The Florida Pantry Prides even outlived the rest of the chain. So Georgia wouldn't have been a big stretch. To this day you can find 50's ex-Food Fair stores with tower signs and ex-J.M. Fiel...

Re: Hechinger
Lowe's wanted to put a store in Newtown Square PA several years ago, and that was not just a rumor. I don't know what happened. But the Genuardi's near the site closed a year ago this month and makes the whole neighborhood feel dead. Now the site of an old quarry that has been long condemned down th...

Re: Possible former JCPenney
I asked one of the Petsmart managers who is pretty young if it was a Korvettes shopping center. She said "no, it was a Staples." I told her it looked like a Korvettes, and then I realized that many people are too young to even know what a Korvettes was. I researched it, and found out it w...
