Re: Farmer Jack in Utah

Safeway had already left Boise proper by this point. I know of two locations that continued as supermarkets: Overland and Vista continued as Albertsons for many years, until a new store was built adjacent to the site. Also, on Cole Road, Waremart operated a store for a number of years, although I am...

Re: Montgomery Ward 1999 closures

I remember the Longview, WA Auto Center closing about a year or two before Wards closed for good. It ended up sitting vacant until the Triangle Center was redeveloped. I did not, however, remember a news story at the time and was not aware that this was part of a list of closures. The Longview Montg...

Re: "First" JCPenney Catalog

JCPenney in the 1950s and 1960s was very much in tune with changing shopping habits, and often jumped from downtown locations to malls at the earliest opportunity. With that said, there were exceptions. In Longview, WA, Montgomery Ward left downtown in the early 1960s and built a store at Longview's...

Re: NEW: Tacoma 1924-2020

That picture, although I have seen it a few times, threw me off. I only saw the Sweda registers and did not notice the DTS registers until I saw this post. That wasn't uncommon with new stores. Some Target stores would have additional registers (complete with scanning) during a grand opening, and I ...

Re: Billings, MT Old Store Photos

I guess Safeway did not do register updates, because they did not expect to keep the stores... Homeland in OK/KS did not have scanning until the mid to late 90's, it was probably one of the last chains to make that move. Or maybe that honor goes to Trader Joe's. In the late 80's, every Safeway I ev...

Re: Billings, MT Old Store Photos

Great set of photos. I always found it interesting how relatively late (1987 in that article) Safeway stuck with mechanical cash registers compared to other chains, even the IGA in that article had scanners in 1981. Most stores by the mid 1980s had at least non-scanning electronic registers.

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

No, it was not the RX symbol. Someone had an example posted. https://imgur.com/gallery/0iXLmZ5 Interesting this receipt says "Payless Drugs NW." Their receipts in CA just said Payless Drug but looked exactly the same. Also the "2830" after Renton, WA would be the store number (w...

Re: TBay Ont Safeway sign: 1950s or 1970s?

It looks like the top portion of both of those signs was replaced when they went to the 1980s era "square" S logo judging by the shape. The current Safeway logo is slightly more rounded.

Walmart is mentioned in a number of country songs, although not always in the grocery aspect.

Re: Safeway's "divested" markets from 1986

1986 was about when the last Safeway stores closest to Boise were closing. Safeway was already gone from Boise proper by then, but surrounding communities still had Safeway. The Mountain Home store was sold to Albertsons, as were a few others. Farmer Jack actually took over some including the store ...

Interesting that they didn't remove the checkstands and shelving before demolition started...seems like they could repurpose the shelving for use at other stores.

Re: Walgreen Agency?

I have seen a few older pictures of west coast cities with Walgreens signs in them, these must have been the agency stores. Walgreens wasn't common here until about the mid-late 1990s.

Re: The closest vintage market near you that is in original condition

The only one that comes to mind for me is the Safeway in Clatskanie, Oregon which is a largely unchanged on the outside 1960s Marina store but with updated signage and an extremely light Lifestyle remodel. To this day it lacks Bakery, Deli, and Pharmacy departments. Not grocery, but there were a han...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

Thank you for this information on Target's pre-scanning systems. Interesting about the 4683 keyboards and the telephone style keypad. I never understood why some chains went telephone style and some went calculator style. Sears was telephone style for the longest time, as was JCPenney. I think mayb...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

In the early 1990s Target was indeed running IBM 4683 registers but not with IBM’s General Sales Application but a third party software package. I’m still trying to determine if they contracted that out or if they developed the software in house. The Target receipts had two-digit line numbers but d...
