Grant City had a store on Industrial Blvd. here in Cumberland, MD. The store never became a Kmart, and in 1975, opened as a Hills, the only one ever in Maryland. It closed as an Ames in 2002, and still remains empty w/Ames signage on the store. Kmart must have known it would turn into a bad location...

There was a King's in LaVale, MD and it closed in 1982. Ames didn't want it as Cumberland was too big for them at the time. They were run out of New England, and Ames bought many of their stores in 1982. They closed about that time. Ours became a County Market in 1984, which was sold to Giant Eagle ...

Most sources I've seen indicate that the company did start in Washington DC as the Sanitary Grocery Company, but Sanitary became Safeway in 1928 (I believe). I think it's more lack of research, considering Safeway isn't beloved at all in that area. Giant is the chain w/nearly double the market share...

Rite Aid started much like CVS, in the 1960's, as a discount HBA store. Rite Aid started in Scranton, PA, CVS in Woonsocket, RI.
