Dart Drug, Wash DC area?

Anybody remember Herbert Haft's company in the late 1970's? They were based in the Wash DC area.

I know they are now gone...........

Re: Fashion Island, San Mateo/Foster City

Weird about Fashion Island Mall: while living in San Mateo ca. 1979-80 (and a few months in 1984) the place hardly rings a bell. Note I am perplexed since I drove a taxi during the above times. Hillsdale; OTOH, is/was quite familiar to me----------it was being renovated then.

Jim Dandy rings a bell and I am not referring to just the song with that same name by Black Oak Arkansas. :)

Thanks for picking your brains on this. Just for clarity, I should probably have mentioned that my dad's recollections probably date from roughly the mid to late 1960s. Chances are what he heard were actually disclaimers that said something to the effect of "available at Safeway suburban locat...

There's still the marinas on Georgia Ave. in Wheaton and on University Blvd. in Silver Spring. There's another one in that general area that isn't in Kensington that escapes my memory. I seem to remember one on Connecticut Ave. up the road toward Aspen Hill, but I'm not sure. Other than that, the m...

Re:

Judging from the vehicles parked in front of the two stores paying particular attention to the one behind the station wagon in front of the Safeway, would I be correct in saying that the picture itself dates from probably about the mid '70's? Late 1977 at the very earliest judging by the 1978-93 Do...

Re: Bag N' Box - Wash. DC Area

I have wondered about this store for a long time, perhaps someone out there recalls this. In the very early 1980's, there was a store in Takoma Park/Silver Spring MD called Bag N' Box (perhaps Bag & Box, not sure of exact spelling of the "and") This store was very low-frills, and the ...

For a chain whose owners were based in Socal, I was surprised that I could only find a handful of references in the LA Times database. Unfortunately the OCR software they used to index the archive confused the words "Memco" and "Mexico" so it's hard to do a search. I found a ref...

Re: 1960's Washington DC Safeway Picture

The store is under renovation and for many years was a hardware store and bike shop, which relocated to a new development near Georgetown, and not far George Washington University. The house is now known as Kossuth House and occupied by the Hungarian-American Foundation. It's address is 2001 Massac...

Odd.

I lived in Pico Rivera in the late 1980s and spent quite a bit of time in the Whittier area and that Albertsons does not ring a bell.

Former 'Marina' Safeway in Bullhead City, Az.

No pics handy but; the Hastings Books chain lives in a retired Marina Safeway along Hwy 95/Ramer St in Bullhead City.

There was a Kroger in West Charleston back in the 1960's N of Kanawha Blvd and just W of the Elk River/Pennsylvania Ave. It apparently is now a Post Office.

Re: Table of operational Kroger stores in West Virginia

Chains often extend their reach by going where their core clientele vacations or has weekend/summer homes. A&P had an extensive network on Cape Cod which outlived most of their New England stores--the store would have remained familiar to people who knew them from before or still knew them in t...

Re: Phoenix - Remembering Smitty's

When Smith's entered the Phoenix market around 1990, Smitty's threatened the chain with legal action over the similarities in both names...yet both chain's operations were combined under Yucaipa's ownership in the mid 90s (Smith's rebranded the grocery-only Smitty's stores to Smith's, and Smitty's ...
