Re: Old JC Penney's ad
They switched from the "Penneys" logo to the current "JCPenney" logo in 1971, though some stores' signage still used the old logo for a while. Some still do... http://www.andrew-turnbull.net/new/lakeview-backdoor.jpg This 1968-vintage "package pick-up" sign still appea...

Re: Plagiarism
As a side note, I might mention that that website is rather embarassing to begin with: An absurdly-long scroll of posts, with gigantic inline images and no sense of style whatsoever. Usually Blogger (the service) is better than that; although it's ultimately at the mercy of the people who use it...

Re: Kroger Superstores
Hi Kroger472 (Are there a lot of Kroger fans here, or is it just me?), It's probably hard to get a good estimate of just how many Superstores still persist in operation. In some places (like West Virginia), I'd estimate that there are as few as three closed or former Superstores for every open one. ...

Re: Kroger: Taylor, MI
I looked and I don't really have any, but that's the one we've referred to previously as the "grid" interior. It was neon lettering on a grid background, and the whole effect was very pink and red (although I've seen some color variation too). It was a late 1980s style, and there are some...

Re: 'Rounded' Store Design
Hi h8wlmt, I think it's probably safe to say that this rounded-off design was Kroger's original prototype for Kroger Sav-On food/drug combinations; chronologically straddling the late Superstore and early Greenhouse eras. There's at least one of these stores in Charlotte (per the feature on this sit...

Re: Farmer Jack: The Aftermath
That "alternate" logo is obviously very reminiscent of Kroger's '70s superstore-era signage. Although it fits better on a horizontally-elongated facade, I'm a bit surprised that they'd use such a sign on a new or newly-converted store: In the market area I'm most familiar with (West Virgin...

Thanks for the photo. It's always interesting to compare and contrast common scenes then and now.
I think those Safeway pylon stores look downright pitiful shorn of their original signage, though...

Mystery store: Sack 'N Save, 111 W Espy St, Kenton, OH
While passing through the town of Kenton, Ohio (northwest of Columbus), I came across this wonderful, pyloned store at the intersection of highways 31 and 53: http://www.andrew-turnbull.net/new/sacknsave.jpg In my opinion, there's something that looks vaguely Colonial-ish about the store: Albers, ma...

Re: Kroger (and ex-Kroger) stores in southern West Virginia
I'd like to continue this thread with a second (and, unfortunately, final) installment in the series: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/andrewt3660/kroger-bluewell-sm.jpg This store is located in Bluewell, West Virginia, and is another example from the "dual greenhouse" school of desi...

Re: A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar
I must say, it's quite neat seeing a few A&P colonial-style stores still in operation under their original banner: Given how much larger a swath of territory A&P's operations covered in the 1960s, these stores must make up a very small proportion of all the "centennials" originally...

Kroger stores in Wisconsin?
I've been planning on moving to Wisconsin later this summer. As such, it goes without question that I've been thinking a bit about the grocery history of the state. I'm aware that Kroger once had operations in Wisconsin: There's a great 1930s picture of a prewar Madison storefront on this site. Some...

Thanks Jim and Krogerclerk for your informative replies, as always!
One detail about both the Hinton and Beaver stores that I found curious was that in their last remodeling jobs, the floor tiles had been resurfaced in the produce section only.

Re: Restaurant and fast food photos, Princeton WV area, 1987
Here are a couple of recent area photos, which I thought I might as well park here: http://www.andrew-turnbull.net/new/princeton-dq-sm.jpg First off, here's the aforementioned walk-up Dairy Queen on South Walker Street in Princeton. Not only is it still in business, but it even has a new paint job a...

Re: 1970s superstore-era Kroger store interiors?
I hate to post a reply that doesn't add anything meaningful to the thread but I wanted to say thanks. Are these the only decor elements that survived? Please get more pictures if you can. I haven't heard of this decor existing anywhere else. While I'm at it, great pics in the other thread too. For ...
