Re: SupeRx, Sav-On, and Thrifty?
I don't recall Thrifty as being part of the SupeRx operation, but the ad doesn't show Gasen's, a St. Louis region operation. When SupeRx was divested, it became two companies, HSI(for Hook SupeRx in which Kroger maintained an ownership interest) and eventually sold to Revco, and another SupeRx compa...

Re: A&P Flickr Set
I had forgotten that decor package altogether, but the Sylva, NC store had that decor, which opened I believe in the late 70's after the completion of the Great Smokey Mountain Expressway(then US 19-A and US 23), so it was definitely open by time the expressway was completed in the early 80's. http:...

Re: Kroger stores in Wisconsin?
It was something of a jolt to see the Kroger font and oval adapted to Krambo, check out this scan of an old newspaper ad from Andrew's Flickr photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrew-turnbull/4099435582/in/photostream/ From former Wisconsinites that I have encountered the memories of Kroger a...

Re: Goodbye Eckerd (Rite Aid buys Eckerd and Brooks Drugs)
The three Eckerd's were distinguished by the color of the signage. Red Eckerd for the Wilmington,DE/Charlotte, NC chain, Blue Eckerd for the Florida chain and Green Eckerd for the Erie, PA chain. I believe at the time of its disolution, the Erie chain was primarily in NE Ohio markets in which Revco ...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center
I'm not sure if the LA Fitness ever operated as Harris-Teeter, but A&P closed in the market in early summer 1999 and Harris-Teeter sold its Atlanta area stores to Kroger at the end of 2001. Harris-Teeter and Publix initially acquired the largest number of former A&P(and Big Star) sites in 19...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center
Toco Hills(Atlanta/DeKalb) represents a modern shopping center with two currently operating supermarkets. Neither are original to the shopping center which originally had an A&P, now an Office Depot. Kroger added an early 80's greenhouse store that has been expanded in remodled several times ove...

Re: Red Foods/Kroger buildings
This is the former Kroger nearest Kings Lodge, a greenhouse that was built in 1982 but didn't open until 1983 due to a strike. I did well enough to force Red Food to close its old store nearby, but when Kroger sold its 7 Chattanooga area stores to Red Food in 1989, it became a Red Food until Ahold m...

The Albany, GA Family Mart was at 2336 Dawson Blvd, near Albany Mall. It appears to now be a medical office complex. http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/#5872/style=auto&lat=p80sbx&lon=7zgkzm&alt=42.981392&z=19&h=265.497147&pid=5874/5003/0.6002=q:2336+dawson+blvd+Albany,+GA:lat:...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
I found the old Albany Kroger Family Center at 2017 N Slappey Blvd. Both Albany Kroger locations were sold to Piggly Wiggly Southern of Vidalia, GA, which was acquired by Bruno's. The Family Center served as Food 4 Less under PWS ownership and FoodMax under Bruno's ownership. The Sylvester Road Krog...

Re: Former supermarket, Elyria, Ohio
Most ground up superstores were 27000 s.f, though smaller and larger versions existed. More often the ones that deviated from the 27k footprint were remodel/expansions. The Belmont Hills Kroger in Smyrna, GA, a late 50's store, was expanded to almost 35k when it received its superstore remodel, not ...

Here's some examples of Fazio's of the 1970's: http://pleasantfamilyshopping.blogspot.com/2008/04/fabulous-fazios.html Fazio's often used recessed lighting rather than exposed tube fluorescent lighting, which looks more like a Kroger, but the shaker shingles were used more sparingly and the flooring...

Re: Safeway, Raley's and Roy's, Elko, Nevada
Was the Raley's originally Lucky's? The decor is very 1970's, yet from the pictures, the store appears well maintained. Also, I assume the Albertson's is part of SVU, but has thus far survived the closures in Utah. I assume, like Smith's it's a more recent vintage store, and less interesting than th...

Re: Table of operational Kroger stores in West Virginia
I checked further and found Kroger did operate in Fairmont from 1978 until 1987 at 1409 Country Club Rd, Marion Square. It would be safe to say this was a superstore format building. I could not find any listing for Marion Square, but areal images show a shopping center. No birdseye view is availabl...

In 1967 Arden-Mayfair operated 281 stores in 7 western states. California had 155, Arizona 28, Oregon 36, Washington 25, Utah 23, Nevada 13, and 1 in Colorado. The company was organized into 15 divisions which had an odd geography. Los Angeles 54 Bay Area 37 with 30 in California and 7 in Nevada Ari...
