Re: Kmart 2000 closures
Wow! Thanks a bunch! I wonder why my local store closed down: apparently, because the fact that they absorbed the Kmart Foods space, they were one of the largest non-Super Kmarts, but they lacked automatic doors. If only had Kmart really was more proactive in this type of thing: if they opened a Sup...

Re: Kmart 2000 closures
My local Kmart (College Station) was closed in 1994-1995. Although the facade was remodeled in 2006, the ridged concrete outside and distinctive parking lot lights are still visible. Kmarts survived in Texas, though the 2002/2003 closures pretty much wiped them out. I blame the Venture takeovers in ...

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX
Could've been a Safeway, I suppose. The Hearne economy has been shrinking for decades. Today, the population is about 4,500 people. Ten years ago it was about 4,700. Twenty years ago it was 5,100 people.
Did Safeway prefer small towns when it was expanding?

Re: Safeway/AppleTree ghost stores
According to a newspaper ad at the time, Safeway was opening stores until their closure: one in early 1988 was listed in Houston (forgot the address, shame on me--but it's now a Food Town). Furthermore, 9325 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX (a Kroger, on the Wikipedia page for Kroger, actually) and the Vil...

Re: Kmart 2000 closures
The number was 72. Here's what I found out so far (to be updated) Brickyard Mall, Chicago, Illinois (built in the late 1970s, demolished) 4930 State Highway 30, Amsterdam, New York (closed in 2000, according to D&D Retail) 2761 Jensen Avenue, Sanger, California (closed in 2000, according to D&am...

Re: Walmart in-store restaurants
I might venture a guess that the reason why they were generic is possibly due to the area: maybe franchising problems, zoning problems, reducing "Wal-Mart shock", etc.

Kmart 2000 closures
Kmart closed some 70 (I think--I don't have a lot of time when writing this) stores in 2000. Which ones? I know there was Brickyard Mall, I think the original American Fare Kmart, and a few others. Anyone have a list?

Re: Why do RICH towns have so many obsolete grocery stores?
By "rich" cities, I assume you mean very large cities like Houston. The answer is this: competition. Houston's grocery market is fragmented and cut-throat. Let's take Houston. Currently, Food Town, Whole Foods, Rice Epicurean, Fiesta, H-E-B, Kroger, Randalls, and Walmart all command a majo...

Re: Bradlee's/Caldor
Strange--it seems like Caldor was more upscale than I thought it was. I was imagining basically Kmart clones for Caldor (the better Kmarts), and for Bradlees, the worse Kmarts. Since Caldor and Venture (a decidedly more Target-like retailer) were once under the same corporate umbrella, why didn't th...

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX
I still hold the "no" vote because there was a Safeway in downtown Bryan that was smaller (or at least the same size) of the supposed Hearne store, and due to my fairly extensive research of the AppleTree chain, I'm tending to rule out Safeway being in Hearne.

Re: KMart Cafeteria and Other Restaurants
The Jackson, MS, one when it opened featured "Little Caesars Gourmet Pizza and Little Caesars International Submarines", according to Kmart World when it opened as American Fare. I don't know about why the Gourmet pizza is there--LC's has been never been gourmet--nor the submarines. I reme...

Re: Walmart in-store restaurants
Hempstead's looks like a Project 79 store. There are a number of them still out there--I know that Navasota still has the old WAL-MART on it (from circa 1980, after they switched from the "Western" font--no star!) last I can remember (which was earlier last year, admittedly). Caldwell does...

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX
- Looking through local newspaper articles in the Bryan-College Station newspaper mentions no Hearne stores, only four in Bryan-College Station. Although Hearne has its own newspaper, it likely would've mentioned it, plus - Hearne would still be in the Houston division, not the Dallas division. The ...
