Re: NEW: Tacoma 1924-2020
Andrew, FYI 1246 (6201 6th Avenue) closed permanently last week, the store has had soft sales for years especially when highway 16 was completed changing traffic patterns significantly, also that area has its share of shoplifting and mayhem

Re: Wedgwood Safeway Seattle
justin provided a picture of the back of the Wedgwood Safeway, this store would be razed in 1965 to be replaced with the current Marina store built against the back of the lot placing parking in the front of the store, notice the Safeway signage that was popular in the 1950s throughout the Safeway c...

Wedgwood Safeway Seattle
There is quite a bit of information that can be found about the Wedgwood Safeway in Seattle on 35th Avenue NE. Safeway began entertaining building a new store from the ground up in the 1940s and by 1951 was completed. Records show that not one person objected to permitting the new store. The site mu...

Re: NEW: Tacoma 1924-2020
Andrew, since its supposed to hit 119 here today and we are in a pandemic I have some indoor time, you may find some of these insights helpful from 1980-2000 time frame Safeway 365 (3507 McKinley Ave) is a Marina that closed shortly after Safeway 1437 (1302 S 38th) opened, the building is now a chur...

University Washington Safeway
The Seattle "UW" Safeway #91 on Brooklyn is being replaced with a modern mixed use site store happening more frequently in tight real estate urban markets. The 26,000 square foot barrel roof store with a basement was opened in 1950. The small store has always experienced high foot traffic ...

thank you justin for the photo of the backside of a Safeway store, that actually is the back of the Wedgwood store on 35th NE which was very similar to the Stoneway store and was razed in 1965 for a Marina store which remains today (albiet the store has been heavily remodeled and no hint on the exte...

Re: Stone Way Safeway 1951 - 1993
THE STORE SOUND SO COOL! I wish we had interior shots, especially of that Store Manager's office! I managed a store in N.W. Miami (Pantry Pride) that was originally a Frederick's Supermarket (Food Fair purchased all 25 of these stores in S. Florida). It was built in the 1950's and was 35000 square ...

Stone Way Safeway 1951 - 1993
The press called it a new "Ultra Modern" Grocery store, the new Wallingford Safeway on Stone Way, built from the ground up, complete with its own parking lot 1951. I visited the Stone Way Safeway many times in the early 1990s, this was a barrel roof store long before Marina's of course, fr...

Ballard Safeway Early 1900's to 1995
Greetings, its been a while since I have posted, but since I have sheltered time at home this is a post I have been meaning to share. There was a Safeway at 465 North 36th Street in Ballard Washington that opened in the 1930s and closed to the public in the 1970's, then it became a training school f...

Re: Safeway 639 Port Angeles Lincoln Street
I was searching old newspapers and discovered an article in the Port Angeles Evening news discussing the opening of the new 25,000 square foot Port Angeles Safeway on January 24, 1967, one of the pictures showed business leaders being served breakfast in the new Snack Bar which was a completely new ...

Safeway 1986 & Unsettling Times Eastern Division
Attached is a picture of Eastern Division area Safeway store and employees I found from a UFCW (union) publication in my files from 1986. It was an anxious time for Safeway as they blocked a hostile take over by the Dart Group and liquidated property and whole Divisions to pay KKR to buy them. The E...

Queen Anne Safeway #368 Seattle
There are/were two Queen Anne Safeways, both Marinas, an upper and lower. The lower was torn down in the 2004 and a new store was built with condos above it. Safeway would like to replace the upper Queen Anne store #368 built in the 1960s with a modern store with housing above it. There are a number...

Re: Texas Updates
hey Kikla, good detective work there, who would have thought that Tom's is a Marina in hiding. Safeway exited Dallas due to the buy out, where Safeway needed cash and paid KKR to purchase the company and thwart a hostile takeover. Safeway which had entered Texas in the 1950s sold their Dallas area s...

Re: NEW: Spokane WA, 1925-1960
Hey Kikla, the Liberty Lake was after my time, I left Safeway in 99, my gut would tell me this is a converted Albertsons from the google cam shot of the front of the building
