You should mention that store is along Leesburg Pike in Tysons Corner, VA. Been in it before, back when BB&B wasn't in every Mid-Atlantic shopping center. That store is right to the west of Tysons Corner Center, near the intersection of 7 (Leesburg Pike) and 123 (Chain Bridge Rd.)

Except in the Mid-Atlantic.

No Dillard's (thankfully), and much more interesting Bon-Ton and Boscov's.

Sears, JCPenney and Macy's will be quite common though, thanks to the fact we already had some Macy's, a ton of Hecht's, a ton of Kaufmann's, so the problem gets worse.

It's a small world. That Norristown Kmart was less than 2 miles from my house when I lived in the Philly area. Had no idea it was a former Grant's. Genuardi's was right next door in that little shopping center.

Grant City had a store on Industrial Blvd. here in Cumberland, MD. The store never became a Kmart, and in 1975, opened as a Hills, the only one ever in Maryland. It closed as an Ames in 2002, and still remains empty w/Ames signage on the store. Kmart must have known it would turn into a bad location...

Sky City also had stores in Tennessee and Virginia. I remember one in Morristown, TN, and a few in the Knoxville and Maryville area.

I remember one vividly in Lincolnton, NC, as well as Mt. Airy, NC.

There was a King's in LaVale, MD and it closed in 1982. Ames didn't want it as Cumberland was too big for them at the time. They were run out of New England, and Ames bought many of their stores in 1982. They closed about that time. Ours became a County Market in 1984, which was sold to Giant Eagle ...

The Weis family is still involved in their namesake chain heavily, as the chain continues to do well in the Mid-Atlantic.

Tons of great information about Charlotte David. Good to learn so much I didn't know about a city I have some familiarity with (living near there in the late 80's).

This to me looks like the mid-70's A&P prototype, the one before the Futurestore.

That's interesting.

And to think we'd have never known Food Lion.

The way I've always heard it told was that Food Lion was entering new markets with new competition, and had to find a new operating name in their new territory, much like Martin's and Giant-PA are. They came up w/Food Lion somehow, it resonated well, and they all got converted to Food Lion.

r, sounds about like the exterior of the new Rite Aid here in some ways. The entrance reminds me of a new Walgreens more than anything else.

Nice site. Didn't recognize the former grocery stores on Broad down there before. The one Safeway really didn't look like one. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see more from Giant and Safeway's Richmond presence, as well as some old A&P's. I noticed you've focused on what chains have left, a...

Most sources I've seen indicate that the company did start in Washington DC as the Sanitary Grocery Company, but Sanitary became Safeway in 1928 (I believe). I think it's more lack of research, considering Safeway isn't beloved at all in that area. Giant is the chain w/nearly double the market share...

Rite Aid started much like CVS, in the 1960's, as a discount HBA store. Rite Aid started in Scranton, PA, CVS in Woonsocket, RI. I forget at this moment how the Rite Aid name was adopted, but the store in Scranton was not called Rite Aid. Their HQ eventually got moved to Camp Hill, PA, a suburb of H...
