There's still the marinas on Georgia Ave. in Wheaton and on University Blvd. in Silver Spring. There's another one in that general area that isn't in Kensington that escapes my memory. I seem to remember one on Connecticut Ave. up the road toward Aspen Hill, but I'm not sure. Other than that, the ma...

Rode by that TV station before and had no idea that was A&P. The former centennial in Fairmont is a lot more obvious, as a slight expansion later it still operates as Fairmont's only Giant Eagle.

Gary, this shopping center was located on Market St. on the east side of York, along old US 30. The shopping center also contained York's Sears for many years. If you've been there more recently, the center built in the early 90's containing Giant and Lowe's is on the site that York County Shopping ...

Love the old Wal-Mart picture. Back when Wal-Mart didn't feel like they wanted to take over the world.

That store is probably in the 600's, I figure. Looks a little newer than some of the 500 stores I remember in Tennessee that have long since been replaced.

I figured that store in "The Deer Hunter" was an independent, but something interesting to note was the sign on the outside read Eagle Super Market. I wonder since the movie was set in Clairton, PA (south side of Pittsburgh), if that was a nod to Giant Eagle somehow.

A&P would have left Columbus in the mid-to-late 1970's, a couple years before they left Pittsburgh, but about the same time they left Cleveland. As for the raised sign for the department store, this may have been an early Schottenstein's/Value City, as the company is based in Columbus. It's hard...

Washington Mutual is a nationwide company for home loans (as are many banks), but only has branches on the West Coast. First Horizon is another bank (known as First Tennessee in Tennessee) that has territory beyond its banking for loans.

This same store (w/the same font and all) was featured in another television ad recently, I believe for 7Up.

I'm suspecting this is an indie, considering that the signs above the aisles have no mention of a store's name. Since Washington Mutual's banking operations are all on the West Coast, and I see a sign of large windows in the front of the store, I'm suspecting it may have been a Safeway in a past lif...

I would guess someone already had the name trademarked in Oklahoma, meaning 7-11 couldn't use it. As for the first 7-11, it looks strikingly like a 1970's era Sheetz location. However, Sheetz was never in Michigan, and still isn't today (Although at their rapid expansion rate, I wouldn't rule them o...

Was Wegmans conventional then? I've not seen these photos in the new Sterling or Fairfax, VA stores, but I'm very impressed with where they've come.

I would assume that Kroger with their divisions has been as diligent in removing signs of old interiors as they have in their namesake divisions. Almost all stores have the same interior here, and that is an interior that dates to about 2000, featuring green, white, and a beige color. Aisle signage ...

I've talked about this in business classes, and you're right. It's all about creating brand loyalty (as are the loyalty cards), as well as a segmentation of the market to the cost-conscious consumer.

A store that small operating in 1972? I think that's a sign as to why A&P is clinging to life.
