The only Safeway stores in Pennsylvania were indeed in Southcentral Pennsylvania. The store in York is at the intersection of Haines Rd. and Mt. Rose Avenue on the south side. Clearly an old Safeway, and the old round S sign from Mt. Rose has Ollie's logo inside there. I believe there was another Sa...

The people this provides no benefit for is the Mid-Atlantic. Eckerd and Rite Aid already operate stores within a 1/2 mile of each other here, so that benefits no one. Both stores are from 1960's shopping centers as Thrift and Drug Fair, respectively. Eckerd and Rite Aid are eerily similar in that bo...

Big Star in Washington

Did they ever make it that far? This weekend I was in Arlington, and saw an indie under the FoodRite cooperative, called Food Star, complete with a star in the middle, resembling Big Star. The store was located along Columbia Pike. I know Grand Union was there until the 1980's, but did they ever con...

Banks and their mergers is something that has fascinated me too. Sadly, I only know about the Mid-Atlantic and vaguely about the Southeast (since many of their banks have penetrated into this region). I assume it's not the same United Bank w/branches mainly in West Virginia and Ohio, but also some i...

It was the typical catalog showroom mix, featuring housewares, china, jewelry, toys, electronics, sporting goods, and seasonal merchandise. They made it into Virginia (Charlottesville, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Hampton Roads had them, doubtful Richmond did), and closed in the mid-90's, like most of the...

As someone stated before about Parole Plaza, it is/was not in Bowie, but in Parole, a small suburb of Annapolis in Anne Arundel County about 20 minutes from Bowie. The Free State Mall was in Bowie, and had a Giant that had mall access, until replaced by a newer freestanding store. Beltway Plaza in G...

Any ideas where the movie was filmed or where it's supposed to be taking place? May help. Giant Eagle has orange handles and baskets on their carts, although I don't believe that's an 80's Giant Eagle interior or a style of cart they used then (At the time, they preferred the fold-down type)

Gold Circle and Richway were both owned by Federated. Stores in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Tennessee (may have been in other Southern areas) became Target. Stores in Cleveland and Pittsburgh went to Hills. I believe Kmart cherrypicked a few as well. I'm not sure about the rest of Ohio and Gold Circle, ...

Woolco lasted much longer in Canada until about 1993, when the stores were sold to Wal-Mart, their first entry into Canada. As for Woolcos in the Mid-Atlantic, there weren't too many. Only one off the top of my head was in Carlisle, PA at the old MJ Mall (now a TJ Maxx/Sears Outlet), it was a Hills,...

It seems that the varying difference of how groceries are loaded is almost a North-South thing. Up north, all the chains feature conveyor belts to the cashier, where the customers unload whatever they have. Food Lion for years has enjoyed a very different system, and I've seen the same system used a...

For a short time after the Fleming collapse, Super Kmart began selling Red & White brand private label merchandise. They have since switched to the Best Yet line (and returned some of their own under the American Fare name). To my knowledge, this cooperative was like IGA, but mainly only in the ...

To my knowledge, it seems that store would be too small and a little too early to be an Acme pylon. Acme's pylons were a little later into the 50's from my research (I wasn't alive then, take into account). The pictures I've seen of Acme pylons indicate some stores into the early 60's had the pylons...

That appears to be a late 1940's-early 1950's era store from the size, but as for a chain prototype, it doesn't seem to fit any that I know of.
