Re: A&P "A" Mart.

I always thought that Bedford Giant Eagle was a former A&P. I recognized the exterior from their MD stores, but didn't know if they lasted long enough to get to that in Cleveland. Being inside that Giant Eagle, it appears there was an expansion that knocked out an old drug store at some point. I...

Re: Chambersburg PA Stores

Nope. Kmart has always been on Wayne Ave. in Chambersburg for 30+ years. Franklin Square wasn't built until the early 90's but reached a worse fate than older centers in the Chambersburg area. To get this back to supermarkets, the old CVS behind Main St. in Waynesboro was the old Safeway. And in the...

Re: Safeway in Central PA?

Both of them were old supermarkets. Whichever one wasn't the Food Fair was the Giant, I believe. It's hard knowing Giant anything from that period because they were so small back then, and the modern Giant is quicker to shelve old stores than anyone, even Walmart. The large store on US 30 being acro...

Re: A&P "A" Mart.

The A-Plus name originated from Atlantic, and was not created by Sunoco when they acquired the Atlantic assets. Sunoco expanded the A-Plus branding mainly to corporate stores now, especially the units acquired from ConocoPhillips who was running Mobil stations in the Washington/Baltimore area. As fo...

Re: Former supermarket, Elyria, Ohio

Kroger's lifespan in Lorain County appears to have lasted much longer than in the Cleveland area. While people have mentioned the superstore that's now Big Lots, Kroger did build a greenhouse at the Sheffield/Elyria line at the intersection of Abbe Rd. and Rt. 254. This is still pretty visible, and ...

Re: Safeway in Central PA?

The former Chambersburg Safeway was built in the 70's and probably closed in the 1985 contraction of the Mid-Atlantic region. It was not the Sunnyway. As far as I know, the Sunnyway has no connection to any chains. That Sunnyway design resembles a 1960's era Weis more than anything to me, although f...

Re: Safeway in Central PA?

Safeway had stores in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, York and Harrisburg. All were closed in the mid-80's, even though they had a close proximity to the still existing Mid-Atlantic division stores in Baltimore.

Re: Table of operational Kroger stores in West Virginia

The Marion Square address I believe is where there is now the Food Lion. I remember that Food Lion being a little different, but there was nothing to indicate that it was a former Kroger. I'm surprised Kroger would have failed in Fairmont considering the competition at that time. A&P would have ...

Re: Safeway Stores in NY and PA

It was sort of hinted at before, but the Southcentral Pennsylvania stores were definitely in Harrisburg and York. I'm not sure about Lancaster. They were all part of the Mid-Atlantic division run out of Glenarden, MD, where Safeway lives on today. The Harrisburg and York stores were closed in the mi...

Re: Table of operational Kroger stores in West Virginia

That Elkins Kroger is one I've been to and it's definitely an old superstore. I don't think it was expanded. It, however isn't all that isolated from other Kroger stores. There's a Kroger in Buckhannon and a Kroger in Weston as well. The Buckhannon store is from the superstore era as well to the sou...

Re: Kmart Plaza Shopping Centers

The Kmart Plaza signage was formerly adorned in Altoona, PA at the store along Plank Rd. The Kmart was once smaller, and was adjacent to a Shop n Save supermarket. Around 1991, the Shop n Save closed (Likely a former Kmart Foods), and was expanded into the remodeled Kmart. The signage disappeared. A...

Re: Searstown shopping centers

Add Cumberland/LaVale, MD to your list of Searstowns. Although little remains from the one here. It opened I believe in either 1963 or 1965, with Sears (of course), Woolworth, Thrift Drug, a 2-screen movie theater called the Palace and an Acme supermarket. The hill across from Searstown (as it was c...

Re: Weis-Logan Valley Mall-Altoona, Penn.-U.S. Supreme Court

Jason, I'm very familiar with Altoona. Granted, I never knew of a Weis on the premises of Logan Valley Mall. The mall opened in 1960 with the existing Sears and a JCPenney that was converted into mall space. I suspect that the Weis store may have been located in the area that was used to expand the ...

As someone asked about earlier, CVS purchased Eckerds in 2004 that were in Florida and Texas primarily, as these were new markets for them. The rest of Eckerd went to the Jean Coutu group, who owned New England's Brooks Pharmacy chain. CVS, being based in New England, could not acquire any more stor...

I could be wrong, but I believe the first Food Lions in Maryland were in Washington County and Hagerstown, where they just remodeled every store in that region. Food Lion opened a store in Greensburg, PA as well as in Altoona, PA in attempt to enter Pittsburgh. The Greensburg store closed almost ins...
