Despite the fact that they were relatively new when the site began, those interiors are pushing 30 now so I think they definitely qualify as “history” at this point.

Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992

Big update this weekend now includes Independence and Kansas City, Kansas. I hope to add other suburbs in the future, specifically Raytown and Shawnee Mission/Overland Park.

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Newspaper archives suggest that the Kroger opened about 1972, which was after the Family Center experiment more or less ended (I think) and was a couple of years before the first superstores.

Re: Colorado Soupers and City Supers

Sorry. No updates from the newspapers as I don’t have access to any Denver papers from that time.

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Rather a late pre-Superstore, has a lot of the Family Center DNA despite not quite being one. Agreed. Also the other large building on the site, which was probably some flavor of discount department store, argues against its being a Family Center as well. But yeah, it definitely has the FC design t...

Re: Colorado Soupers and City Supers

FWIW, most of the Colorado Soupers in Denver (but not all) seem to have opened in former Miller’s/National/Del Farm locations. They first pop up in my listings in 1979 and unfortunately, this is the last year for which I have Denver data. If I have time this afternoon, I’ll see if I can dig into any...

Re: NEW: Bloomington IN 1929-2020

There was a KMart Foods, probably 3175 E Third (the KMart site, now demolished) operated by National that probably opened in the 70s. There was a now-demolished Kmart adjacent to the 3216 E. Third Standard/National location in the list, so this seems to be the one you're thinking of. The Kmart stil...

Re: NEW: Springfield IL, 1925-2023

Nothing concrete, but a theory: I suspect that the store at 1157 Governor (at Lincoln) is the one you're looking for. It may have shown an address of 1155 and it would be easy for someone to confuse the two cross streets and lose a digit. I've seen things like that happen elsewhere with stores on a ...

Big Toronto update

I didn't post this as soon as I finished because I hoped to get some more photos added, etc. But it's been a busy couple of months. So until I can add more, here is my GREATLY expanded Toronto location list, including a much lunger date range and the addition of many new franchise stores and smaller...
