Re: Walrus article

Interesting article. This interested me: "The new supermarkets provided everything under one roof and a parking spot to help you haul it home. But, in one key regard, they offloaded the work of buying food to individual shoppers. “After World War II, the spread of automobile ownership and the g...

Re: Short-lived grocery stores

Here in SoCal the king of short-lived grocery stores would have to be Haggen, which lasted about 6 months from first store opening in March 0f 2015 until August 2015 when it started closing stores. IIRC all stores were closed by December.

It was closed at least three years before the Vons buyout.

Re: Westland Fair at Decatur and Charleston in Las Vegas, NV

Below is a link to an archived article on when the Wal-mart was planning on coming to the shopping center in 2000. It had a Builder's Square prior to where the Wal-mart is currently. It has also several smaller stores where the Lowe's is and talks about a Vons and Raleys at the time that has since ...

I'm not 100% sure about this but if I remember right Ralphs had to choose between that store and the former Alpha Beta at Wilshire & Hauser (now a Ralphs Fresh Fare) as part of a consent decree with the FTC.

Re: Safeway/Sav-On 3rd & Fairfax

Came across this photo in a Facebook group showing a Safeway and Sav-On combo. I'm assuming this was a Super S prior to Sav-On taking over the drug portion. Wasn't there a Safeway a street over or was that a Market Basket? There was indeed a Safeway in the location where Whole Foods is today. It cl...

Re: Safeway Grand Opening-Photo-Unknown Date & Location

Nice find. I have to wonder though why so many furniture stores feel the need to remove so many fluorescent tubes. It's the little things like that which makes stores look more tired than they really are. Bright lighting will make the scratches and imperfections on the furniture stand out more whic...

Re: New location list: San Diego, 1925-1980

The one oddity on this list is the only Vons, a small store at 3780 Mission Blvd. that is listed as being a Piggly Wiggly pre 1954. Vons' first full-sized supermarket in San Diego opened in the 1950's on Mission Blvd. in Oceanside (I don't know the exact year) but the street address is not the same....

Re: Vons Pantry Stores

For years I assumed this was previously a Safeway since it was a Pavilions Place. I see they didn't just use "Place" on the smaller acquired Safeway stores in better areas. I'm pretty sure they first used the Pavilions Place moniker on the stores acquired from Safeway before applying it t...

Re: Mayfair Locations-San Diego-1959

The Thursday, November 12, 1959 edition of the San Diego Union contains many advertisements for supermarkets and grocery stores in the San Diego area. I will post information from each one separately. Mayfair ran a two-page ad. Pork was the main special, "spareribs or smoked picnics," &qu...

Re: Mayfair-1958 Color Film-California-Unknown Location

It looks exactly like the store that was located on 30th street near University avenue but the morning shadow wouldn't make sense at that location because it was on the eastern side of the street (Unless it was actually shot in the late afternoon). At 0:35 you see them walking into the store. The ca...

11766 Wilshire Blvd, West LA--Pavilions. It's the short building between the towers. This store has been talked about in another thread as having been a Ralphs before it was torn down to build the tower. http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=pp734453vcd0&style=o&lvl=2&scene=3580...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

Would you happen to know if the Vons at Lakeside Shopping Center was always a Vons? I assume it was always a Vons. I was thinking there was a chance that it might have been a Shopping Bag originally, but that is unlikely because it was built in 1962 and Vons had already bought Shopping Bag in March...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

I can't entirely tell if the building that now houses a Smart & Final Extra! existed at that time; in 1977, this shopping complex was rather new as the land was actually part of the Ranch lot that was sold off. The LA County Assessor's website shows both the Alpha Beta (currently Smart & Fi...
