Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs
MikeRA, I don't know what I have to do to prove to you that picture 2449 located at 6301 Roosevelt Blvd. was a Penn Fruit. As I previously said I grew up in that neighborhood and I am old enough to have shopped there when it was a supermarket. (I think it closed as a supermarket in the early 70s). ...

Re: Toy Chains
Back when I lived in New Mexico, there was a Lionel Playworld store in Albuquerque that we went to on occasion in the mid-to-late Eighties to early Nineties (I remember my parents buying NES games there, and I remember seeing sales brochures for the new NeoGeo system when it cost $600 to buy the sy...

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs
2449 was definitely a Penn Fruit. I grew up in that neighborhood and shopped a few times in that store. One of its unique features was that it had entrances on the Boulevard and from the parking lot. Most of the activity was on the parking lot side. I think there were only 2 or 3 checkouts on the B...

Re: Pantry Pride
IIRC, some of the Setzer's stores eventually became part of the Pic 'N Save drug/discount chain. These stores were like mini discount stores with pharmacies and a substantial grocery department (no meat or produce). I think these were mostly stores that had been replaced with newer Food Fair or Pan...

Re:
Sorry, I am out of town on business. But, I will briefly say that Hills was purchased by Food Fair in the Mid 70's (will confirm date when I get back). It was a financially troubled chain (may have been so because of labor disputes or price wars) when Food Fair purchased it. I do not think I have m...

Safeway also has a store in Wilmington, DE that originally opened as Genuardi's when the Genuardi family still owned the chain.

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs
Some great pictures. I think I can help you identify some of them 2435 was never a Food Fair and I don't think it was ever a supermarket. The former Food Fair/Pantry Pride is now a very busy Shop Rite and it is located at Frankford and Knorr which I think is across the street from this building. 24...

Re: New York Area: A&P
Today Great A&P is reviving all of its banners to make them more competitive with other chains. You'll be seeing conversions to Pathmark Sav-a-centers as well as several Food Emporiums to A&P Fresh Markets. This is an exciting time for A&P as its 150th anniversary year begins in 2009, o...

Re: Sears sign oddity
Out here in the Philadelphia area, only the Cottman Avenue Sears (Former Gimbel Brothers) location has the current lowercase Sears logo. The Neshaminy Mall Sears has the Upper Case logo. The Oxford Valley Mall and Upper Darby location (both former Gimbel Brothers) have the 1980's Upper Case logo. Th...

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs
Image # 47...There is another Big Marty's in Hatboro, PA that looks exactly like the one pictured. I guess it was an Acme too at one point as mentioned by a previous post. Image #47 was a former Lionel's Kiddie City location that closed in the mid 1970's, when Lionel started to build the bigger sto...

Re: Jewel T - store design and range of operations
Jewel T also had a store in Feasterville, PA. This store was in a standard shopping center store. It was sold in the mid 1980's to Genuardi Super Markets, which converted this store to their "Mad Grocer" division.
