Re: Fotomat

I don't know if I could've forgiven my dad! It would have made for a cool playhouse. There's one near my house that has been several things over the years, but is currently a coffee stand. There used to be two others nearby, but both have been demolished in the last few years as the shopping centers...

Re: Supermarkets in the Movies and TV

Albuquerque's Pick n' Save (a former Safeway) can be seen in the new movie "Sunshine Cleaners." You can see the exterior two tone sign (with 7Up sponsorship!) through the window, and you get several shots of the vintage '60s signage inside the store.

Re: Long John Silver's freestanding stores

Did LJS have any financial trouble in the 1990s? I've found a bunch of store closings in that decade, way before they began swapping out stores for combos I think they came close to bankruptcy in the mid 90s. They closed a bunch of stores in the Atlanta area around '94. Last time I was out that way...

This store makes an appearance in the film "Sunshine Cleaners." You get to see the exterior signage and quite a bit of the (fantastic) interior signage as well.

Re: Albuquerque, NM former pylon safeway

Aww, I was in that store earlier this year and thought it was fine. I mean, beautifully dated, but it was clean.

Standing in the produce department I felt like I had fallen into an episode of Mad Men.

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center

When Belmont Hills opened in Smyrna (in the late fifties) it had two supermarkets, Kroger's and A&P. I think both coexisted until the early eighties, when Kroger decamped for a greenhouse-style store on South Cobb Drive.

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

Another long-lost brand of popcorn was "TV Time" Popcorn, which came in a pre-measured pouch, with one side containing the popcorn and the other side, a butter flavored shortening/salt mixture. You emptied both sides of the pouch in a saucepan or popcorn popper. A similar, but short-lived...

Re: "DISCO KROGER" to change formats.

Maybe it had another remodeling sometime between 1999 and 2004, because when I lived down there in late '90s that store was vintage seventies. Orange, baby. I loved it. When I ran in there a few years ago...boringly beige. I was so disappointed.

Re:

There are still MCL cafeterias in parts of the midwest (Columbus and Indianapolis to name a few), but they're not very good and they seem to be nearing the end of their lifespan. Atlanta (and much of Florida) suffered greatly when Morrisons was acquired by Piccadilly. The S&S cafeterias of SC a...

Re: Woolco

The only former Woolco building I'm familiar with in the Atlanta area is in Marietta near the Big Chicken. It was not built as part of a new, second-tier enclosed mall. Instead, it was built on the same land as a large strip shopping center that first opened in the very early 1960s. The shopping cen...

Re: Sears sign oddity

A mall near me in Atlanta was recently redone and Sears put that exact same logo back up. We have a Sears nearby testing the retro Sears signage, so I'm wondering if they are considering doing this whole market in that signage instead of the lower-case signage and so put the logo old back up until a...

Re: Belmont Hills Shopping Center (Smyrna, GA)

I have opening brochures for the center and it opened with an A&P and a Kroger. The Kroger ran ads in the earlier 1960s that declared it was in MAMMOTH Belmont Hills Shopping Center! The other major retail anchors were Grants, Kesslers, and Woolworths, but up until 1963 Sears and Penney's had ye...
