Colonial Big Stars (Post 1960's-before A&P takeover)

I love all of the old pictures of the old Colonial/ Big Star food markets from the 50's and 60's. But I'm puzzled i've not seen any pics of (post 1960's) stores that they had, before they became A&P's. Also does anyone know/have any pics/ads of what the old Big Star logo looked like, both in the...

Edric: I'm suprised that nobody ( another supermarket chain, that is) picked up this store, it seems pretty nice-sized the Was this A&P/FM store in an area with lots of competition (Kroger, etc) or was the store in a bad/declining neigborhood? Judging by the number of old grocery store sites, it...

Re: Hill's? Hill's-Korvette

Korvette's had a couple of supermarkets in the Philadelphia area that they sold to Food Fair in the 1960's. I think they only used the Korvette name. They were large stores and the one at Cederbrook Mall that Food Fair made into a Pantry Pride was the busiest and most successful store in the divisi...

My family operates Big Star stores in Oxford, MS and Amory, MS. I am thrilled to hear that there are other stores remaining! I thought our two were the only ones left. Since Malone & Hyde went out of business, they now get things from a different supplier whose name escapes me at this time, and...

Food Fair/Pantry Pride: How did they fall (esp in Phila)

This subject has proababy been thrown around before, but I'm still unsure what caused Food Fair's initial 1978 bankruptcy, and it's sudden exodus from its' Philadephia "home" division It seems that they were doing everything right, l mean according to the penn fruit article on the site, PP...

Though Grand Union was not in Philadelphia, it did operate for several years in the 1960's and 1970's in the nearby Trenton (NJ) area I re- member an ad found in an old news paper in my grandma's attic for the grand opening for a "state of the art" Grand Union in Ewing New Jersey. Today it...

Thank you, I have some Moody's books on company histories and while looking up "Pantry Pride" during the Ron O. Perleman era. (mid 80's) I remember reading that a huge chunk of stores were sold off-before Perleman(sp?) prepared to buy Revlon-(about 100, to who, i don't know.) with only the...

Food Fair Pantry Pride in Tampa?

I know that the Food Fair/ Pantry Pride chain was big in Florida especially around Miami and Ft. Lauderdale but i'm wondering if the chain at any time had any stores in the Tampa area?

Once again a bit off, but I recall seeing a photo of a pre-supermarket style LS Ayres grocery store in downtown Cincinnati, 1920's vintage, in a book about Cincy history. Also read an article that suggested that had Federated kept Gold Circle, Richway, etc. they would be today's Walmart. Yeah But F...

IGA "O&O's" in Philadelphia (post Penn Fruit)

I had read the aricle on the demise of the Penn Fruit stores in philadelphia and I had heard on a local show called the "Irv Homer Show" that some of the former PF stores became O&O's ( IGA stores owned and operated by store employees) and were supplied by a local IGA wholesaler (Wette...
