Re: Two chances to see me...

Great lecture, David! Who would've thought it would start with snuff, and lead to gardenia seeds...

If only I wasn't three days away by car...sigh.

Will any of these be livestreamed or recorded?

Re: Does anybody know when Kroger stopped using those cube signs?

FYI, that particular store was built in the 1990s, not 2007, and the sign was a carryover from a 1973 predecessor store on the same site. It was actually brought up in this thread some 13(!) years ago.

I assume the cube signs were last used in the early 1990s.

Re: Brainerd, MN supermarket history

Oh look, a Super Valu franchise carrying the same name as Jerry Lundegaard's Oldsmobile dealership! LOL.

You also managed to dig up an intact late-1960s National with original doors. Congrats!

I don't know. This was a mall store with a unified facade, and I assume that the look was dictated by the developer.

Re: Thunder Bay, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1975-2019

Here's another lovely photo I was able to track down, this time through microfilm. The Loblaws (and Kmart) on 1101 Arthur Street West, upon opening in March 1972: This had to have been one of the very last Loblaws stores that opened prior to the advent of the chain's still-current "L" logo...

Re: Thunder Bay, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1975-2019

Here's a rare photo I stumbled upon. It's the A&P store on 570 Syndicate Ave. S. as it appeared in 1984, just before closure. The store still bore its original 1963-era modernist exterior, but had been updated with the newer pill-shaped sign and logo. The photo itself appeared in a Thunder Bay b...

Re: NEW: Syracuse, 1925-2020

I've only had a chance to briefly glance over the work, but it's great to see another city in the Great Lakes watershed done! Loblaws faded away with nary a trace, here...they didn't keep the stores going as Bells franchises like they did in Buffalo. Some of the stores morphed into Price Chopper, bu...

Re: NEW: Belleville ON, 1932-2006

Say, check out the late '70s Safeway at 305 North Front Street! The building hasn't changed much (it still has its natural brick colouring and display windows), and the canopy features a "bridge" that extends over the adjacent parking lot entrance. Never saw a store like that before!

Re: Mystery stores in Terre Haute, IN

Per Chain Store Age, 115 Walnut was a Kroger that opened in 1954. Per newspapers: 333 S 3rd: Montgomery Ward 600 S. 3rd: McMillan's Sporting Goods (late 1960s/early 1970s, no listing in the 1960 city directory, which is the latest one I can access right now). Thanks for the detective work, guys!! 1...
