Re: Old ServiStar Hardware signs still up?

Not much to add, but I took a picture of this sign in Rochester when I visited the city in 2014. I didn't even know what ServiStar was at the time; I just had a hunch that there was something about it that I should document and preserve.

Re: NEW: Shreveport, 1925-2020

Here's a bit of trivia about Shreveport: It's the city where the founders of Id Software started their career at locally-based Softdisk, and where the first Commander Keen game was written on evenings and weekends. So where were Tom Hall, John Romero, and company buying their groceries in 1990? Acco...

Re: Safeway-Santa Clara-3071 Stevens Creek Blvd. (Valley Fair)-Store Is Closing

Given Safeway's mergers and renovation pushes over the last couple decades, it's impressive (if bittersweet) that a store survived with the early/mid-1980s backlit "ribbon leaf" signage until now! Maybe not as impressive as an untouched 1956 store would have been, but old enough in 2023 to...

Nice one!

I'm curious about the "alphabetizing dilemmas" you encountered. I'm also curious whether the older directories (pre-Quiet Revolution) were printed in English or in French.

Re: NEW: Sheboygan WI, 1924-2020

Sheboygan...one of the many cities from my past! The window for me to do research there both opened and closed years ago, so thank you for plugging in another hole on the map in the Great Lakes watershed. Interesting to see that National stuck around here for about as long as they did in Milwaukee! ...

Re: 475 Pim, Sault Ste. Marie, ON: Former Safeway Marina?

Whoa, whoa, whoa! This is great, and it's getting better and better. In another Facebook post , I found a picture of this actual store, lurking behind a pair of gas stations. It featured a full Marina facade with upturned wings, and a wonderful googie parking-lot sign. Several 1963/64-era stores in ...

475 Pim, Sault Ste. Marie, ON: Former Safeway Marina?

Several years ago, a former resident gave me a tip-off that a Marina-type Safeway store once existed in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. This was unexpected. Safeway didn't enter the GTA until the post-Marina era, and a Sault store would have had to have been supplied from Winnipeg if it had opened in adv...

If only I wasn't three days away by car...sigh.

Will any of these be livestreamed or recorded?

Re: Does anybody know when Kroger stopped using those cube signs?

FYI, that particular store was built in the 1990s, not 2007, and the sign was a carryover from a 1973 predecessor store on the same site. It was actually brought up in this thread some 13(!) years ago.

I assume the cube signs were last used in the early 1990s.

Oh look, a Super Valu franchise carrying the same name as Jerry Lundegaard's Oldsmobile dealership! LOL.

You also managed to dig up an intact late-1960s National with original doors. Congrats!

I don't know. This was a mall store with a unified facade, and I assume that the look was dictated by the developer.

Re: Thunder Bay, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1975-2019

Here's another lovely photo I was able to track down, this time through microfilm. The Loblaws (and Kmart) on 1101 Arthur Street West, upon opening in March 1972: This had to have been one of the very last Loblaws stores that opened prior to the advent of the chain's still-current "L" logo...
