Re: JCPenney mall locations
Citadel Mall in Charleston, SC is an interesting case for JCPenney, as it's had two incarnations. The mall opened in 1981 with Sears at one end, Belk in the middle, and Thalhimer's at the other end. In 1992, May Departments Stores bought out Thalhimer's, and sold the Charleston location to Dillards....

Re: W T Grant
Growing up in Columbus, GA, the main anchor in Cross Country Plaza was Service Merchandise. But it oddly only ever took up part of the large building it was in. It sat around collecting dust until Steve and Barry's moved in. And then right back out a few months later when they went under. Nextdoor i...

Re: Kroger "cube" signs still in use at former Krogers
This one is interesting. I remembered it from high school from a trip I took to this area (15+ years ago). It's kind of obscure... It's in Lanett, AL at 1401 South Gilmer Avenue. It's a greenhouse, and it has the cube sign, but they have completely de-emphasized the fact that it's a Kroger. They pre...

A&P Flickr Set
Here's a great Flickr set of some vintage A&P and Super Fresh markets: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42444189@N04/sets/72157622354737793/ Incidentally, this image here is the A&P decor package I remember. And this is the first picture I've seen on the internet of it. If anyone knows of any mo...

Re: Tampa Bay Area Photos
Apparently, the Publix used to be a Kash N' Karry. Publix purchased the location prior to KK's changeover to Sweetbay.

So, perhaps that was a late '90s/early 2000s Kash N Karry prototype?

This store: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18435608@N00/4260428624/ And this store: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18435608@N00/4259726209/ I don't recognize the prototype. It almost looks like an A&P Futurestore, but I'm fairly positive those never made an appearance in the Tampa area. (It was Fami...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida
I'm semi-positive that Food World was owned by Bruno's, not Publix. I'm not aware of any other name Publix has ever used (aside from their current subbrands of Sabor and Greenwise).

Re: Black roofed Bi-Lo to be replaced
The only other former Krogers I know of in the area are:
• Whole Foods on Houston Northcutt Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant.
• Sentry Buick-Pontiac-GMC on Savannah Highway.
Anyone know of others?

Re: 4450 Nelson Brogdon Blvd, Buford GA.
I'd guess the store in the photo was originally a Food Giant, since they were fairly prominent around Atlanta in the early 1980s. But if you suspect the Goodwill across the street was a Food Lion, then perhaps not. On closer inspection, the store in the photograph appears to be a bit new for a forme...

This appears to be a store that was expanded and retrofitted into a centennial. Centennials usually had an entrance on the front of the store. This one has the entrance on the side - which was common for pre-centennials. My guess is the expansion was the area to the right of the front display window...

That's interesting - I've never seen a regular (a.k.a. 'Big K') Kmart remodeled to resemble a Super K before. For that matter, I rarely have seen an exterior of a Kmart updated at all since the early 1990s. One of our local Kmarts just recieved what I would call a 'whitewash' on the inside. They pai...

From what I've been told by folks who have lived here longer than me, it certainly was a Piggly Wiggly. It moved to a newer location down the street. Sofa Super Store moved in approximately 16 years ago. I do not know when the original store was built. News reports have stated that it was originally...

It looks similar to this Piggly Wiggly location in Vidalia, GA mentioned in an earlier thread:

Not exact, but similar. The arched roof is what makes me think it's a former PW.
