Re: New York area: Waldbaums (Safeway?)

Late to the post: The ShopRite wasn't on the Lefrak property. It was on Horace Harding on the next block east where a gas station is now. You'll get this: It was towards the bowling alley - away from Loehmann's. :) I know where Loehmann's was, and the bowling alley, which was called Bowl-A-Way. It ...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Ple

Histories of Stop & Shop seem to differ. This one http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/The-Stop-amp;-Shop-Supermarket-Company-Company-History.html seems to confirm that there were no Stop & Shop supermarkets in New Jersey in the 70s. But the Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Ple

That's odd... I didn't know there were Stop & Shop supermarkets in New Jersey in the 70s. I thought they didn't expand there until much more recently, and had in fact been limited to the New England states, without even moving into New York until the 90s. Am I mistaken?

Re: Safeway on Kissena

To start, I was born in '65 so I can't answer to the Safeway at this location. However, the odd shaped curved building that is now Kissena Farms was an "Olinsky's" supermarket. They were a small chain of 20+ stores that died out as the older owners died. I worked for "Olinsky's"...

Re: Shop Rite in Queens

There was a Shop Rite in Lefrak City (Rego Park/Corona) on the Long Island Expressway in the early 70s. That same store changed names a lot. It was a Food Town, Food Fair, Red Apple and a Shop Rite. The building is gone and it's now a "BP" gas station and a smaller building housing severa...

Re: Waldbaums, Queens NY (Corrected and added Photos)

I can double confirm that store was a Penn Fruit. I lived on Junction Blvd. across from Lefrak City from 1963 to the mid-70's, and when we first moved there, there was a Penn Fruit on the ground floor of the Lefrak City apartment building on Junction Blvd. Within about a year it became a Hill's. Whe...

Re: Waldbaum's in upstate New York

The remaining grand union chain is owned by C&S wholesale grocers. They supply most of metro NY other than King Kullen and Shoprite As noted elsewhere, C&S was Grand Union's major creditor, and when the chain went under they sold off most of the locations but retained some... those are the ...

Re: New York: Bohacks

I don't see this here already, so I'll post it: just found an interesting blog post by Richard Bohack, great-grandnephew of the founder of the chain. You can read it here: http://mingum.blogspot.com/2010/01/bohacks.html . Among the things he mentions is that "Bohack purchased Daitch Shopwell, P...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

Watching a "Maude" rerun where she just announced that she'd spent her day "shopping for food values at Bohack, the A&P, Finast, and Big Bear." She wouldn't have any of those options in Tuckahoe now. She might not even have had all of them in 1972... I think you're right abo...

Re: Grocers in "real" malls - not strip malls

As an odd follow-up to my last post, I just discovered that in the A&P photo gallery (still in the "old" section of Groceteria) the last photo that is currently posted shows an A&P Fresh Market, apparently during its Grand Opening, with a caption saying it is unidentified. I am vir...

Re: Grocers in "real" malls - not strip malls

In Mt. Kisco, New York (Westchester County, north of NYC) there was an enclosed mall built in the 70s -- not huge, but definitely not a strip mall -- that had a Waldbaum's at one end, accessed through the mall. The mall itself was two levels, but in a very odd rectangular formation and no real ancho...

Re: New York area: Billy Blake? Food Parade?

I can't help you with New Jersey, but as a kid I also went shopping at Great Eastern Mills -- later shortened to Great Eastern -- on Long Island, and possibly in Queens and/or Brooklyn, though I remember them being in Jersey too. It was one of a number of smaller regional discount chains in the 60s ...

Re: New York area: Billy Blake? Food Parade?

The idea of Modell's having a grocery section seemed bizarre. I had completely forgotten that Modell's was ever more than a sporting goods store, but now that you mention it, I recall when it was White-Modell's, having merged with White's Department Stores back in the 70s. There was a huge one in Yo...

Korvettes was hardly trying to emulate anybody else -- they were the store others were emulating, as they were one of the original discount chains, having started in about 1947. My recollection is that they started more upscale, especially since they had stores in midtown Manhattan, and attempted to...

That's interesting, this site must have automatic correction enabled. Unfortunately, it changed what I wrote to "You-Boat"!
