Re: Mistakes Which Led to A&P's Demise
A&P began transitioning to supermarkets at the right time (late 30s) and although the business press thought they didn't have enough suburban stores, they went into the 'burbs with everyone else. They stayed in city neighborhoods longer than other chains, though. Once the Hartfords withdrew fro...

Re: What if they tore down the Food Fair but left the pylon?
When the building was a Food Fair, would the entrance have been oriented towards the parking lot or towards the street? 32nd Street has always been a major thoroughfare. However, I don't think it was ever a walking shopping strip. There have been pictures posted elsewhere of stores in this same typ...

Re: NEW: Safeway in NYC
Was "Safeway-First National" actually used on stores, or was it used to advertise both store brands? I honestly cannot say. Newspaper ads and articles refer to them as "Safeway First National stores" (or sometimes "First National and Safeway First National stores") thr...

Re: NEW: Safeway in NYC
I am pretty sure that 4028 E. Tremont Ave. store in the Bronx was an A+P. From the look if it today I'd say you may well be right. Looks like A&P may have taken over the space after Safeway was done with it in the 1940s. May even be a new building. And thanks! There will most likely never be a ...

Re: "End of the line" supermarkets
https://www.groceteria.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Binder1.pdf Treasure trove of information! Also, how about Westward Ho Markets in Los Angeles and beyond in California? So does Hills Supermarkets (before and after Food Fair) in the northeast not count? And Fox Markets (before and after Food Fai...

Did these before the holidays but I haven't posted till now. I've added lists for a good chunk of the Greater Miami area, with more to come: Fort Lauderdale and Broward County: https://www.groceteria.com/place/florida/fort-lauderdale-and-broward-county/ Palm Beach County: https://www.groceteria.com...

Re: Super Fair, Los Angeles
I know you have been busy with some juicy research finds lately 😍 but, any upates on Super Fair? Sadly, due to some work projects, I've been at one of those points where stringing actual sentences together for fun is beyond my capacity right now. Sigh... Understood......................... 🤪 Don't ...

Re: Super Fair, Los Angeles
I'm only able to find evidence that two of these ever existed: the one above in North Hollywood and another at 18300 Vanowen in Reseda (now the site of a Ralphs in what is likely a new building). They seem to have closed in 1972 along with rest of Food Fair's stores in the region. It looks like the...

Re: NEW: Ventura/Oxnard, 1924-1981
Apparently Fox Markets took over the Santa Cruz Market at 752 A Street in Oxnard in 1959 and then basically took it back late in 1960. Can't find an article explaining why. Santa Cruz also took back another store (1924 E Main) they had offloaded on about the same timetable. Interesting for sure! I ...

Re: NEW: Ventura/Oxnard, 1924-1981
For your Saturday afternoon viewing pleasure, it's back to SoCal: https://www.groceteria.com/place/california/ventura-area/ Be forewarned that some of the Google Maps links for Main Street in Ventura insist on pointing to Main Street in Santa Paula even though the correct, valid addresses are in th...
