Re: South Florida Updates

Still can't find the new build Pantry Pride that replaced the Dadeland Mall Food Fair (converted to Pantry Pride then closed) I have a 1983 list that includes a location at 13005 SW 89 Pl. Could that be it? Basically Food Fair/Pantry Pride just did not include location addresses in their ads ...

Re: South Florida Updates

Missing is 12254 S.W. 8 St. which was the first new build Pantry Pride that I opened in South Florida (which is now a Fresco Y Mas) Do you recall what year this one opened? I can't find a reference for the address until Winn-Dixie in 1982. Food Fair apparently did not like to list individual ...

Re: South Florida Updates

This is the last big South Florida update, though I may be able to do some small additions (like bringing Miami-Dade into the 1980s) later: https://www.groceteria.com/place/florida/miami/suburbs/ And yes, Steve Landry, more Food Fairs! WOW!! What a bonanza of locations! Awesome work and discoveries ...

Oh WOW!

That is awful news.

He was a GREAT guy with loads of information. I enjoyed his contributions especially about the Food Fair Empire!

They had about 15 stores in Georgia at that time including 4 J.M. Fields stores.

Re: Mistakes Which Led to A&P's Demise

A&P began transitioning to supermarkets at the right time (late 30s) and although the business press thought they didn't have enough suburban stores, they went into the 'burbs with everyone else. They stayed in city neighborhoods longer than other chains, though. Once the Hartfords withdrew from ...

Re: What if they tore down the Food Fair but left the pylon?

When the building was a Food Fair, would the entrance have been oriented towards the parking lot or towards the street? 32nd Street has always been a major thoroughfare. However, I don't think it was ever a walking shopping strip. There have been pictures posted elsewhere of stores in this same ...

Re: NEW: Safeway in NYC

Was "Safeway-First National" actually used on stores, or was it used to advertise both store brands? I honestly cannot say. Newspaper ads and articles refer to them as "Safeway First National stores" (or sometimes "First National and Safeway First National stores") through about 1963, but it does ...

Re: NEW: Safeway in NYC

I am pretty sure that 4028 E. Tremont Ave. store in the Bronx was an A+P. From the look if it today I'd say you may well be right. Looks like A&P may have taken over the space after Safeway was done with it in the 1940s. May even be a new building. And thanks! There will most likely never be a ...

I used to walk by it everyday as a kid from the nearby P.S. 72 elementary school.
