And how about Shoney's Big Boy?

I guess there are "Big Boy" chains all around the country with varying "first" names?

Wondering what's the connection and how many different "______" Big Boy chains are there?

I know of no connection between Landucci and the Friedland family (which owned Food Fair Inc.) But the time line is very interesting, in that the Friedland family was very protective of the moniker and has many court cases recorded regarding this. Bruno's Food Fair was actually (don't know for how l...

Pavilions history

Question for our Pavillions expert :) I have been recently informed that Pavillions was borne of an earlier chain called Pantry Supermarkets? (or Pantry ...... something). This would be pre-Vons purchase. Timeline..... late 1960's or early 1970's? If so, interesting, because the number of stores inv...

Hey guys, in your expert wanderings and research, have you stumbled across anything that would suggest the existence of a grocery store chain in Los Angeles called Fox Markets? They had 50 stores in Los Angeles and 25 stores in Las Vegas. Their headquarters were in the N.E or S.E. area of downtown L...

Side note: Food Fair used a decorative marble on their stores for years (usually a glossy rose colored marble).

I doubt it was a Food Fair, mainly because they were not building or buying stores of that size in the late 50's. Food Fairs in that era were mostly above 25,000 sq ft.

Of all the major chains of that time, Food Fair had the highest average square footage and the highest sales per square foot.

Yes, Edric............I remember those locations. Post Food Fair and Publix agreements............Eckerds never seem to master the ability to scout for excellent locations for their stores. In fact one of the major negatives mentioned by retail business experts were the drug chain's poor locations i...

Food Fair Gas Stations

Found this tooling around Time Magazine archives: "Posted Monday, Aug. 31, 1959 SUPERMARKET GAS stations will be constructed by Food Fair chain (sixth biggest in U.S.) on parking lots of its 400 stores. Plan calls for 24 stations within a year, others later. " 1959 folks...............amaz...

".........had an agreement to build next to Publix stores from the 1950's into the 1970's." And, did you know that Food Fair was the FIRST supermarket company to have "that" agreement with Eckerd's BEFORE Publix? Food Fair was a master at real estate and shopping center developem...

Sorry, I am out of town on business. But, I will briefly say that Hills was purchased by Food Fair in the Mid 70's (will confirm date when I get back). It was a financially troubled chain (may have been so because of labor disputes or price wars) when Food Fair purchased it. I do not think I have mu...
