Re: Mystery restaurant with frying pan-shaped sign

Here's an even bigger pointer: an early Mary Browns location in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, complete with what may be a vintage Golden Skillet-era frying pan sign. https://www.google.ca/maps/@47.5188527,-52.8072565,3a,75y,18.15h,90.09t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sGzBx-qRgmwcBzITj4LCMAw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?ent...

Re: Mystery restaurant with frying pan-shaped sign

The Mary Browns chain in Canada started as a Golden Skillet franchise and I believe still uses the same recipe.

FYI....Google now has Streetview for the Soo from 2007 and it confirms your suspicions. It was Pino's then and the current building wasn't constructed yet.

This IGA in Lubec ME (the most easterly town in the US) is also an obvious former A&P:

Re: NEW: Moncton NB, 1930-1997

According to this post on a local FB group, all 4 Mountain Way stores shut down in 1982, and the store on Acadie Ave in Dieppe later became a No Frills. No dates on it though.

Re: Older KFC Locations

KFC in Canada had no corporate connection to the US for about 20 years. Colonel Sanders sold off the company in the rest of the world in the 60s but kept the Canadian operations, and even moved to Toronto for a while. The architecture and menu evolved completely separately, and to this day the Canad...

Thrift was a discount Dominion banner. It was common for Dominion to rebrand older and smaller stores to either Thrift or Mr. Grocer in the 70s and 80s.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to cover a small corner of the world where I've never (yet) been. And on second observation: I had no idea that Kmart Foods ever operated in Canada, let alone lasting until the 1990s! I wonder who their grocery partner was in Charlottetown? Kmart ceased to exis...

A few more updates: 107/126 Catherwood: Pretty sure this is the same store. 235 Gilbert: this was on the northwest corner of Crown St and City Rd. There's a good CBC article about the whole history of Haymarket Square: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/haymarket-square-saint-john-1.496312...

My hometown....I got quite a few updates, corrections, etc if you don't mind: 435 Brookside Dr: this is the Brookside Mall shopping centre. Originally a Dominion opened in 1980, it was sold to Sobeys ~1988. Moved to the other end of the mall (an ex-Kmart space) in 1999. 169 Dundonald St: Not listed ...

Hi everyone....Maritimer here who just came across this board. Nice to see a few other people who notice/care about this sort of thing! Some context and history about Loblaws in the Maritimes: After Loblaws bought Atlantic Wholesalers/Save-Easy in the 70s, they launched the No Frills brand in a hand...
