Re: Dart Drug, Wash DC area?

Ahhh...Dirty Dart. Our closest was on Cedar Lane in Vienna. It's a CVS now but the store's been chopped into several pieces. The shopping center had a Marina Safeway at one end and Dart on the other.

Seems like the Dart changeover to Fantles happened fast.

Abandoned Gable Safeway In Luray, VA

Here are a few views. Poor old place is in desperate shape. From what I could see, the interior is in gutted ruins.

Re: Kmart Chef

OK - now that I look - the old Kmart on Jermantown Road in Fairfax, VA may have had one of those. I'll have to check old phone books. Thanks for posting that!

I kind of like it. If someone went in and fixed it up a bit it wouldn't be bad. As was said above, give people dignity and pray they respect your efforts.

Re: 15 S. Adams Street, Petersburg, VA

There used to be an IGA in Scottsville, VA with signage that looked roughly the same. It couldn't be IGA supplied, could it? And I know the Scottsville IGA was never anything else.

Re: Safeway, Charlottesville, 1972

I had to look at the picture twice to get my bearings. That's Main Street, going towards UVA. More likely than not, the building's gone, but I'll head down that way this weekend to see what's there now. Charlottesville had at least 3 Safeways at one point...one on River Road (now a Tractor Supply ...

I would also love to see some vintage photos. My grandfather lives in Vienna so we'd always bomb over there to see a movie or just goof around. One noteable thing is Woolworth's. They seemed to hang on over there for a really long time. The mall had its makeover but Woolworth's was still the same ...

Kmart Foods In Central Virginia

In Charlottesville, the Kmart is being remodeled. When I moved here, there was a Food Lion attached to it. I don't believe it had always been a Food Lion, due to the age of the store. Did the Kmart Foods concept make it this far north? The Kmart was built around 1967-68. The former grocery store is ...

Cool. Now I have a better idea of what the Barracks Road Colonial looked like when it opened here in Charlottesville.

It's a Kroger now, just renovated.

I have a feeling the older Kroger turned into Sunrise Grocery. It was near the little Bi-Rite really close to the interstate.

I haven't lived out there in about 10 years but when I went to Belmont I knew the area really well.

I figured it was pre-grand opening. In any event, the photo looks bleak.

I don't think the Woodstock Safeway had a Super S. It's a very small town and those were a rarity (at least to me) out here, where the land was ruled by DrugFair and Dart and independant operators all those years ago.

The Alberta gullwing store is really something. It looks so desolate, like an abandoned airport. I need to get a picture of the Woodstock, VA store. It has one hump and a smaller hump on the side. I don't know if it's original or what. It's a Ben Franklin now, still with the Marina fittings. Good ...

Where were the old Green Hills Krogers? I know where the newer one is (it's a nice one!) but can't picture the others. Was there one in the Bluebird shopping center?
