Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan chain grocery/supermarket locations
Groceteria, Andrew T: Thanks for doing these! If you'd like to cover later years too for just about anywhere in MI, I'd be willing to help.

Re: South Shore Mall, Aberdeen, WA history
Blah, I keep getting Troutman's and Gottschalks mixed up for some reason.
Anyway, Wishkah Mall in Aberdeen was where the Troutman's was. It's a Ross now, and the only part of the mall that survived.

Re: South Shore Mall, Aberdeen, WA history
I am still curious though where Emporium operated. Troutman's Emporium was based out of Eugene, Oregon. They operated primarily in WA, OR, and ID, but also had two strip mall stores in NV (Elko and Winnemucca), plus one in Chico, CA. The Chico store was just called "Troutman's" because of...

Re: South Shore Mall, Aberdeen, WA history
The big gaping hole was indeed a Kmart that closed in 2003. There was a second mall in Aberdeen called Wishkah Mall, which was anchored by Lamont's, Ernst, and Top Foods. That mall was torn down in 2000 except for the Lamont's (by then a Gottschalks, now a Ross) and Top Foods (which stayed until 201...

Spartan chains in Michigan (Glen's, D&W, Family Fare, etc.)
Okay, so here's my attempt to untangle the mess that is the Spartan D&W The first D&W was a former IGA in Grandville, and is now the site of a bar. D&W seems to be SpartanNash's "upscale" brand, but it's slowly being whittled away. One of the remaining D&Ws is a mall anchor...

Re: Northern Michigan A&P's
Sharing some more thoughts on A&P. For some reason, A&P never used the Farmer Jack name north of Bay City. Hampton Square Mall had an A&P attached to it that probably closed around 1992. It was "replaced" with a Farmer Jack several miles away, across from Bay City Mall. That st...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center
When Eastland Mall (now Courtland Center) in Flint, MI opened, its front entry had a Kroger on one side and A&P on the other. Both stores were gone by the late 70s or so. The Kroger became a Duff's Smorgasbord (now Old Country Buffet), and the A&P was later a Jo-Ann Fabrics for a long time, ...

Re: Grocery spottings in and on the way to Michigan
According to the current tenant's website : "In 2002, Playmakers moved down the street to our present location at 2299 W. Grand River Ave., the site of the former Schmidt’s grocery store. The sign with the shopping cart lady on it is left over from the days when Schmidt’s was located here.&quo...

Re: List of Detroit-area A&P stores from 1983
8483 (or 6483?) W. Grand River, Brighton, MI I can't place this one. The Grand River address numbers seem to jump from the 700s to the 8700s as the road passes over South Ore Creek. This store was in the Brighton Mall. I believe Farmer Jack razed and rebuilt it in the 1990s when the shopping center...

Re: Chatham supermarkets in Michigan?
"PharMor" (no dashes or anything) seems to be a Detroit-based pharmacy chain with a few locations. I don't even think the "real" Phar-Mor operated there. The "real" Phar-Mor actually had a couple Detroit locations planned. I found an article once stating that they were...

Most of the Michigan stores looked like that. I think the only one that didn't was Courtland Center in Flint, because it was converted from a local store called The Fair. I think the Michigan stores all opened around 1987-90.

Re: Dairy Queen Through the Years
Here's a breakdown of some of the ones near me: Oscoda: Walkup stand that I believe opened in 1953. It closes in the winter. East Tawas: Former barn DQ that expanded to have indoor seating. It serves food and used to have the "Brazier" signs until recently. Despite its serving food, it clo...

Re: Taco Time - Inside and Outside Clackamas Town Center?
Oh, there's a lot of this: Fashion Square in Saginaw got a Taco Bell in the late 80s, duplicating a Taco Bell just down Bay Road. In 1993, the mall got its food court, including a new Taco Bell and a McDonald's, which was also across the street. Taco Bell also moved the Bay Road store to Tittabawass...

Re: Target '90s neon
I was in the Target on Miller Rd. in Flint just last week, and it still had the red-yellow-blue-green neon and overhead "arrow" signs. According to a listing, it opened in 1988. Last I checked, Saginaw still did, too. I'm surprised at this, since the one at Bay City Mall was one of the fir...

Re: Britt's Department Store
Seems Findlay Village Mall in Findlay, OH had one. It became a Kmart until the mall was highly renovated in the early-mid 90s. Kmart moved to the other end of the mall and closed in the early 2000s. The former Britt's area was torn down for a new wing anchored by Elder-Beerman, and the newer Kmart i...
