Re: Does this gas station look like it was a Mobil?

OK.. So, if the station that you are referring to is on the Westbound lane, and on the western side of the (at least used to be) traffic light at Conchester Hwy @ US1, that was originally a BP, and was part of the BP/Mobil swap. I don’t know when it closed, but my brother worked for Maryann Layman, ...

Re: Genuardis/Starbucks - Too bad, as usual, the genius management at Safeway had to mess with a good thing. Prior to the Safeway buyout/nightmare/fiasco/destruction of Genuardi's, they had Bucks County Coffee co. (local independent roaster with great coffee in the Philly area) kiosks in quite a few...

Re: Similarities Between Texaco and Shell Signage

Jamcool,
All of the brands you mentioned are jobber supplied as well. MOST of the Shell locations, as well as a majority of ExxonMobil locations are now jobber supplied, as well as ALL Texaco locations. There are some direct Valero, and Sinclairs out there as well...

Re: Former ARCO Gas Stations in Philadelphia and its Suburbs

Almost all of the Delaware Valley (and NE Pa.) Arco locations were purchased by John Deuss, who then founded Atlantic Refining (Also included with the deal was the ARCO Philadelphia refinery). The Central, and North Jersey locations went to Shell. Atlantic, along with the refinery, was purchased by ...

Re: Does this gas station look like it was a Mobil?

I know where this location is, and I can't remember what it was prior to Coastal. I doubt it was a Mobil though, as the building doesn't look like their design The Mobil in Springfield is definitely a Mobil built location. Also remember, quite a few of the Mobil gas only locations (some did have a c...

Re: Goodyear Tire Service Centers

That is a hard question, however almost all of the stores built up until the mid-late 80's had a huge, oversized showroom for the appliance department (remember that both Goodyear and Firestone sold major appliances up until the late 80's...)

Re: The Very First Texaco "System 2000" Stations (1981-1983)

Ephrata, It's also possible that the (what used to be a )Shell in the middle of Camden was an ARCO location originally - Shell purchased the NJ marketing assets of Arco when they pulled out of their east coast operations in the 80's. They also had rectangular signs, similar in shape to Getty. It's n...

Re: A&P Wyckoff, NJ

There also was the North Haledon A&P, almost on the Franklin Lakes border... Closed about the same time as Wyckoff did, and is still a Foodtown. (This was not a Panzenhagen - Excelsior Panbro store though) Wayne/Preakness also became a Foodtown as well. The Franklin Lakes Acme became a Gristede'...

Re: A&P Wyckoff, NJ

MaynesG - The original Wyckoff A&P was located on Clinton Ave., at the intersection of Wyckoff Ave. It closed in the first round of closings in the 70's. After the store was closed, A&P moved into the former Stop & Shop store on Greenwood ave., but this was NOT a replacement for the orig...

Re: Modern Genuardi's closures

Corporate stupidity at it's finest. It is amazing how Safeway can KILL a great company within the space of 10 years.! Take a great, family owned and operated business, with a great product, integrate your crap programs and products, and, voila, you have failure! It looks as if Safeway will take a lo...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Ple

Stop & Shop had been in NJ since 1969-ish.. There were quite a few stores, I can remember Wyckoff, Wayne, and quite a few other locations. THe logo on the tractor trailer was the logo that was used all throughout the 70's... However, they did disappear at one point in the late 70's - ear;y 80's,...

Re: W T Grant

I can remember an older, smaller Grants store in Wyckoff, NJ. It is in what is now the Boulder Run shopping center, right in the corner (L shaped plaza). I know that one was there in 1976... There were also 2 larger locations that I can remember, one in Pompton Plains, NJ on Rt.23, (HUGE store, comp...
