Re: Toys-R-Us
Here is something I found, that confirms that Toys R Us was called Children's Supermarket. Perhaps they bought them out? Or did the chain start as Children's Supermarket? There may be a few other things that apply to this web site. Such as a mention of Korvettes. Most of it is probably "off top...

Re: Hechinger
Perhaps junky is not the best word. Some were fancy, such as Lowe's and Hechinger, with nice displays. Others had a "stack it high and sell it low" philosophy.

Re: Toys-R-Us
I remember one in Bailey's Cross Roads, VA. I think it opened in the 60's, and may have been one of the first ones. It seems that it was called "Children's Supermarket," and Toys R US (sorry, can't do the backwards R) was the slogan underneath the sign. I believe the founder's last name wa...

Re: Levitz Furniture
Is that the one in the shopping center with Home Depot, BJs, Petsmart, and Dick's? Or did they have two stores close together?MikeRa wrote:The Levitz Furniture that was near me, on Lincoln Highway (AKA Business US Route 1), in Langhorne/Levittown, PA, is still vacant since the entire chain went under.

Re: Bradlee's/Caldor
I remember Memco in the Washington area. Bradlees took most of them over, but after that, it seems they went to a lot of other companies. I think the one on Richmond Highway in Alexandria was demolished and became a Target. AJ Wright was owned by TJX. It was meant to be an Urban version of Marshalls...

Re: Hechinger
OK, the store that was before Mr. Good Buys in Lawnside was HOW- Home Owners Warehouse. It may have been owned by the same company, since I get similar "trade marks for sale" pages when I look them up. I also see a company by that name that was owned by Service Merchandise. But I don't kno...

Re: Levitz Furniture
I remember the Levitz store in Fairfax Virginia. Shortly after their grand opening, it was hit by a tornado on April Fools day. Every single tube in its big neon sign was broken. I went to look at the damage, and with the parking lot lights laying on the ground and debris everywhere, someone drove u...

Re: Hechinger
No, it was not a major chain. Just a small fly by night place with a couple of stores. If I remember right. Channel was originally owned by W & R Grace, a building materials manufacturer. I guess someone could have owned it before that, but that goes back to the 1970's. Pergament was never this ...

Re: Hechinger
It seems there was another chain very similar to Mr. Goodbuys that was there for a short time, before Mr. Goodbuys was there. It may even be the same chain with another name. It was a junky store, just like Mr. Goodbuys. Something similar to Panelrama. But it was not another location, it was in the ...

Re: Possible former JCPenney
I agree. That location is far enough away from Wegman's, that it should not be a problem, and there are a lot of houses around there. Home Depot moved to the new shopping center to keep Lowe's out. The old one sits empty. (Lowe's had planned to open a store but Home Depot beat them to it.) Almost ev...

Re: Hechinger
I guess I should add, for anyone looking things up, that the Turnersville Builder's Square moved just over the township line, and was called Williamstown. That store is now a Sam's Club. The old Builder's Square in Turnersville was torn down, and became a Kohls. Since Vornado owns that shopping cent...

Re: Hechinger
Hechinger only had 2 stores in NJ, Deptford and Maple Shade. Builder's Square had only 2 stores in NJ when it closed (Freehold and Turnersville), but they had others that closed previously. It was another minor Home Improvement store, but I can't remember the name. It was never a Bradlees, that I re...

Re: Hechinger
Hi. They only tried to buy the buildings. Bradlees had a store closing sale before they turned the buildings over to Hechinger. Yes, it was supposed to be Philly, but then it fell through. Bradlees was having problems, and I think they needed the cash. There was a Mr. Good Buys in Lawnside. It was a...

Claber's in Pittsburgh
Does anyone Remember Claber's? I remember them when I was in Junior High. I loved Christmas decorations and electrical things, and Claber's had the best assortment at the best prices. I think at some point, they tried to get out of the department store business, and into the Home Center business. I ...

Re: Hechinger
I can't give you the exact dates, but I worked at the Jenkintown store, which was the first one in the Philly area. That opened in 1981. Langhorn opened next, then Woodlyn, then Feasterville, then Rising Sun Ave in Philly, then Norristown. So, it was sometime in the early '80's. Downingtown replaced...
