Re: Hiram's

As a store manager for Lucky Stores I was sent to the Lakewood Plaza Lucky #453 (aka Hirams) as its new store manager in 1962. This store when built by the Harris family was reportedly one of if not the largest grocery store in the country. Lucky was in the process of changing the names and re-merch...

Re: Michael's Market Orange CA

Hi Steve, I remembered your father Vern very well as we both worked for Michael's Markets at the same time. He was well liked and respected at Michael's and was a good friend of Joe Goodnight. As you know the company had service meat departments, on his visits to the stores if customers were waiting...

Re: Why traditional supermarkets have been dying

Hi Folks, Let me add my 2 cents on this issue. Although now retired I have been in the grocery retail, wholesale, and distribution field for 47 years. In that time I have seen many grocery companies come and go. Some have gone under because as some of you have pointed out mismanagement. While others...

JUBILEE STORES

Does anybody remember the Jubilee Grocery Stores. The stores were purchased from Safeway. One was located in Lynwood and one in Norwalk. The stores were financed by Royal Dairies. The GM was Rudy Neely, formerly the Sales Manager of Michael's Markets. They opened sometime in 1964-65. Thanks Larry Co...

Re: McCoy's Market, Whittier

A little more history on the McCoy's Market at Beach & Ball Rd in Anaheim. It was originally opened as a Michael's Market in/or about 1964. The store manager was yours truly. The Assistant Manager was Otis Ozolins, the Meat Dept. Manager was John Nelson and the Produce Manager was a man named Ne...

Re: Does anybody remember All American Mkts. in So. Calif?

Does anybody remember the small 10 store chain called All American Markets in Southern California. This was the same chain that Albertson's bought out to make its entry into the Southern California Grocery Arena. The thing that I remembered most was that the All American Markets each had a gigantic...

Re: Michael's Market Orange CA

I check in pretty often on a blog about local history in Orange County, CA. This week, the author posted some photos from the "Prospect Plaza" shopping center in the city of Orange, on the southeast corner of Chapman and Prospect Avenues. The 1966 photos (which you can see in greater deta...

Re: Vintage "Bargain Basket Markets" to be Revamped

I owned the Village Market in Fullerton, located at Commonwealth & Basque. During the early 70's I hired a good friend Lee Christenson as a part-time meat cutter. He worked full-time as a meat cutter for the Bargain Basket in Placentia. I would love hear from anyone about him or their experience...

Re: National Association of Food Chains-1957-Jim Dandy, etc.

Jim Dandy acquired the four Dollar Market stores located in Long Beach together with the five Jim Dandy Stores they already had bringing their total to nine. I started working for Jim Dandy #5 in Bell on Atlantic Blvd. in 1953 as a boxboy, chec...
