Re: Safeway-Santa Clara-3071 Stevens Creek Blvd. (Valley Fair)-Store Is Closing

It opened January 1957, and the sign tower is original. At the time, it was the second largest Safeway in Northern California-after Market & Duboce SF. The Super S drug was added next door in October 1963. 1968 photo: https://flickr.com/photos/61170309@N08/10245446825/in/photolist-gBmAoV-NRGRER-...

Re: history of Giant stores

Just wanted to add a note about #32, 6326 Arlington Blvd in Falls Church: It was later Grand Mart, and is now New Grand Mart. There are photos of it on Flickr; it still looks much the same.

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

This Austedo commercial was filmed at Howie’s market in San Gabriel, at 6580 N San Gabriel Blvd. According to the LA County property assessor, the supermarket was built in 1962, with an expansion out front built in 1984.

Re: New location list: Santa Cruz/Monterey Counties, 1925-1980

Santa Cruz Public Library has digitized a "Santa Cruz Sentinel" photo from 1959 of a Lucky supermarket marquee. See: https://history.santacruzpl.org/omeka/items/show/76005#?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=0 The photo caption says that the new Lucky supermarket would open on January 6, 1960. It...

Re: Was "Skaggs Alpha Beta" used in California?

Yes! This location (Encinitas’ 2nd Alpha Beta) opened in 1981. Built as Wiegand Plaza and later renamed Encinitas Marketplace, this location lived to become Lucky and Albertson’s before Kohl’s took over the space

Foodland - Kaneohe, HI

This is an engineering marvel as much as it is a daring space-age design. Foodland supermarkets of Oahu opened their Kaneohe store in the Windward City shopping center in November, 1958. The shopping center featured wavy awnings, and was described in the grand opening advertisement as "Air-born...

Cool! Even the incinerator chimney remains, as well as the original streetlamps in Westfort Food's east parking lot.

I found another newspaper photo of the National City Safeway, days before opening. It was said to be large enough "to enclose five of Safeway's pre-war stores":

Thanks for drawing those comparisons, Andrew. That's very good insight. I agree that it's fascinating how an international chain Safeway could maintain such a uniform architectural style in all their regions. Is that Port Arthur Safeway building still standing? Thanks also for the current photo of t...

You're welcome klkla. A long time ago, Groceteria had photos of that Safeway when it was abandoned. Well, Andronico's will be moving in after all!
