Re: Anyone in DC/MD/VA area remember S. Klein's?

Thanks, Rich. Actually, I believe there may have only been two S. Klein stores in the D.C. area -- Alexandria, VA and Greenbelt, MD.

Downtown D.C.'s long-gone department stores

The following were thriving department stores based in Washington, D.C. Each of them went bankrupt and closed: Lansburgh’s (1973), Kann’s (1975), Garfinckel’s (1990), and Woodward & Lothrop (1995). All four stores were located in downtown D.C.’s shopping district – Lansburgh’s and Kann’s along t...

Shakey's Pizza Parlors in Maryland

I grew up in Washington, D.C.; so, my friends and I used to frequent the Shakey's Pizza Parlor on Riggs Road at University Boulevard in Adelphi, MD. They had the best pizza! There were two other Maryland locations -- one on Annapolis Road (Rte. 450) in Landover Hills and one in Suitland. When I move...

I am a native Washingtonian; so, I definitely remember W. Bell. When I worked at 19th & L Streets, N.W. in the early 80's, W. Bell was located diagonally across the street from my job. I shopped there quite a bit, probably too much. LOL! Not far from where I lived, there was Maryland location on...

Re: Supermarkets (and auto centers) in Malls

Actually, a couple of Hecht’s stores did have auto centers. There outparcel behind the Hecht’s at Prince George’s Plaza was definitely a Hecht’s Automotive Center initially. Landover Mall also had a Hecht’s Auto Center, which was original to the mall opened in May 1972. It was listed in the Washingt...

Grand Union at Prince George's Plaza

Grand Union was original to Prince George’s Plaza when it opened in 1959; it was at the west end, in front of where Woodward & Lothrop (now J.C. Penney) would open a few years later. It remained at the Plaza until the early to mid 1970s. I don't know if the store itself was demolished or simply ...

Anyone in DC/MD/VA area remember S. Klein's?

Does anyone from the DC Metropolitan area remember a store called S. Klein's? It was a (junior) department store, and the location I remember was at Beltway Plaza -- located on the end where Burlington, Marshall's and Target are currently located. Does anyone know the history of S. Klein's, especial...
