Re: Kroger in Woodhaven, Michigan

This Kroger location is now occupied by a Planet Fitness gym. I believe that the Planet Fitness moved in either this month (Oct. 2014) or last month.

Re: Kroger in Woodhaven, Michigan

I forgot about the Kroger further up West Road near Telegraph, which is a newer, bigger location (a former Farmer Jack). Yep, it was probably decided to close the smaller store due to its small size and its age, and the increased competition in that area. A shame, as I don't remember a time when tha...

Re: Kroger in Woodhaven, Michigan

Sad news.... I happened to visit the strip mall in which this Kroger is located today and noticed that it has been closed, and the Kroger lettering removed from the brick exterior. :-( I don't know the exact date that it closed yet, but it must have been within the past couple weeks. The K-Mart acro...

Re: A&P: 2624 West Jefferson, Trenton MI

Recently someone posted this photo on a Facebook group which shows this former A&P in December 1984, when it was a Joe's Prime Beef grocery store. (Previously it had been a Gerry's Market -- the word "Market" can still be seen underneath the sign -- but from the 1940s to 1960s this loc...

Re: Kroger in Woodhaven, Michigan

I went inside this Kroger last week and noticed that the 1970s wall graphic lettering (shown in my photos at the beginning of this thread) is now gone, replaced by more modern lettering. I was sad to see the old funky lettering gone from the walls, but I do have to admit that the modern lettering do...

Re: Any traditional Meijer's supermarkets still operating

Incidentally, Meijer just came out this month with two books about or by the store's founder, available at Meijer stores. One is around $3.99, the other $7.99. I haven't had a chance to really look at them yet, but they did have some old photos inside. A few years back, Meijer stores carried a coupl...

I have a few photos that I took in 2006-2007 of some local Farmer Jack stores that I will get around to sharing eventually... (when I have more time). A few days ago, I finally found out the opening date of the Farmer Jack in Riverview, Michigan that I'm nostalgic about. It opened on Nov. 16, 1967, ...

Here's a couple more details about that Lawson's I mentioned earlier, the one at 15600 King Road. This is a scan of the letter I had mentioned, from 6/25/87, where I noted to a friend that they were changing the sign at Lawson's to a different name. I had drawn a quick picture in the letter of what ...

I used to go to my local Lawson's regularly in the 1980s. The one in Riverview, Michigan, at 15600 King Road, opened sometime around 1980. I used to get all my comics there. It was basically just like a 7-11. On June 25, 1987 (I know the date because I mentioned it in a letter to a friend), they cha...

Old A&P in Trenton

On Tuesday, I went to Trenton, MI's old downtown area on West Jefferson to add its address details to my webpage and take photos. I had known that A&P had a store at 2620 West Jefferson from at least 1945 to at least 1970 -- possibly earlier, possibly later as well. (Before 1945, during the 1936...

Here's a story about how it's good to take a photo of a grocery store while you can... Late last year, I was walking up Fort Street in Lincoln Park, MI, taking down current address numbers for my website, when I saw a Food Mart grocery store at the NW corner of Fort & Champaign that I hadn't not...

I started the page after seeing Groceter...

Completely forgot about the Grove Drugs store in that shooping center. I believe that Grove Drugs got it start at the Fort-Grove strip mall at the corner of Fort & Grove in Wyandotte, which also had an A&P as its anchor, and which opened in the mid-1950s. Both strip malls also had a Mister ...

This was 100% like stepping back into 1979 and at the same time I had a strange feeling and tightness in my chest and the realization that nothing was quite right here, the whole place was a little askew. Everyone either sported a scowl or was dressed in polyester. Hey, maybe you did step back in t...
