Questioner, here's an update - I just spoke with my dad and he says there was a Bag n Box located in the Wilde Lake Shopping Center in Columbia, MD in the late 70s/early 80s. The store either was replaced by a different chain at some point or got renamed, but he says that the new version had conside...

Hey, Questioner, while researching another topic I think I found out that I was wrong about Bag 'n' Box in Baltimore. I believe I'm confusing it with a chain (or store?) called Box and Save - there was one in Glen Burnie, MD, which is now a church.

I think I've got an answer for you. The link below states: "The congregation worshipped outside under a tent on the Glen Plaza parking lot on Baltimore- Annapolis Blvd in June, 2002 and continued throughout the heat of the summer and even during inclement winter weather then moved indoors to th...

I can't link to the photo you posted, but do you mean the North Arundel Church on Baltimore/Annapolis Boulevard? I live near Glen Burnie and my husband's friends all grew up around there - maybe I can get some info from them.

No picture, but a post in this link mentions the Cat and Fiddle: http://www.wm.edu/wmcar/Danvilledig/gb/guestbook.php "I used to go "duck pin" bowling at the little bowling alley above the Cat and Fiddle grocery store....so many memories.....I will be 60-years-old my next birthday and...

danielh_512, how long have the two Food Lions in Hagerstown/Washington county been open? I remember my brothers talking about the Ocean City store 20 years ago. The Food Lion website lists the store on Coastal Highway in OC as #246, and that there is another FL in OC, #397. The lowest-numbered FL in...

For years, there was only one Food Lion in the state of Maryland, in Ocean City, I believe.

Wow, that list brings back memories - we always bought a bunch of Cragmont soda to put in the cooler when we went on vacation.

And since you mentioned Scotch Buy - I always thought the character on the label looked just like the late Mike Douglas!

When I worked for a marketing research company in the 1980s, one of our clients was Scott Paper Co. I learned that Scott made paper products for Giant Food, which at that time was the biggest DC/Baltimore grocery chain. Heinz was another client of ours - they made private-label canned soup for super...

Bag & Box/ Bag 'N' Box

I believe this chain extended into the Baltimore area. I think I remember my parents shopping at one - perhaps in Glen Burnie. I will ask my father about it - his memory is really sharp when it comes to grocery stores.

Dave, I don't know how accurate the info is, but this website about trading stamps implies that the Grand Union stores descended from the Tea Company: http://www.studioz-7.com/stamps1.shtml "When Cyrus D. Jones founded the Grand Union Tea Company in 1872, he issued cardboard tickets to customer...
