Re: Nichols Discount City
There was a Nichols Discount City on Lake St between Elmira and Horseheads NY. It was a really plain type of building; kind of a low end KMart in character. After I moved out of town, in the mid 80s, it became a PharMor store and then closed in the early 90s, I would guess. Here is a photo when the ...

Re: Anyone remember/know about Bells Supermarket or Super Du
We had a few Super Duper stores in the Elmira and Horseheads area. It seems to me that the name Fortin's was somehow associated with the store on Gray and Hoffman Streets in Elmira. That store was expanded shortly before I left the area in the mid 1980s. The next time I was in towm, the store had be...

Interesting Lowes Setup, Pittsboro NC
I was in Pittsboro, NC and went in a recently renovated Lowes Supermarket. It was surprising to find that all of the store shelving is low, maybe four feet high, - you can see from one end of the supermarket to the other. It was an odd feeling being able to see everyone in the store. I wonder if thi...

Scotty's in Florida
Here in Central Florida was a chain of hardware stores/lumber yards called Scotty's. When I moved here in the mid 1980s, they were pretty much the only game in town as there were neither Home Depot nor Lowe's stores any place near us. They had both big lumber yard type stores (in Orlando and Kissimm...

Re: Defunct Video Store Chains?
I must agree with the article posted by LadyNoir; Blockbuster is in really bad shape, it would appear. The Blockbuster in my town in Florida disappeared over night, as did the one in the next town over. It was surprising that they stayed open as long as they did with, from what I saw, little or no t...

Re: Barker's Departmant Stores
* The Bedford Hill and Mt Kisco listings are actually just one store - these two towns are right next to each other.
* There was a Barkers in Elmira NY on Lake Street.

Re: Great American
Thanks for the info. Did Horseheads, NY have a Great American where the now Arnot Mall is? I remember seeing that somewhere last night, but forgot to save the link.
Yes, you are correct. There was a Great American in the Arnot Mall until it was expanded - I would say about 1980

Re: Great American
Until at least the mid 1980s, there were two Great American grocery stores in Elmira, NY. One was on Lake St., the other on Erie St. (I think) on Elmira's southside. This store, located next to a closed store called Elmira Discount, was demolished some time ago. The southside store was small and kin...

Re: The ever shrinking Winn-Dixie
Article: "The Woes of Winn Dixie" Here is an article from the August 10 Orlando Sentinel that brings in to serious question the future of Winn Dixie supermarkets. I have not seen an article this negative about the chain since just after their bankruptcy in 2005. http://www.orlandosentinel....

Re: Acme in New York
There was an Acme store located in Grand Central Plaza in Horseheads, NY. It was an older store with a barrel roof. As I remember, it was not at all busy. The Acme was open in the early 80s, when I lived in Elmira.
I left Elmira in 1984 and the store was still operating.

Super Duper
There was a Super Duper on the corner of Hoffman and Gray Streets in Elmira. It was a fairly small store, then was expanded. My friend Anne called it the "Super Dirty", which was a pretty reasonable description. It closed in the 80's, was demolished and a convenience store sits in its place.
