Re: 5915 Yonge, North York ON
Ugh....What they did to the old arched Metro (late 1950s Grand Union....which was a Miracle Mart by the 70s and 80s) is GOD AWFUL. See the Metro store at the link below. The beautiful arch has been smothered by postmodern guck. http://g.co/maps/pgygj It used to look like this Metro (ne Grand Union) ...

Sainsbury featured in a film: "Cashback"
Thought I'd mention that I recently viewed the 2007 British film "Cashback", which is about an artist who works in a Sainsbury supermarket....there's a rather revealing fantasy scene. ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cashback_film Fans of recent supermarket design might be interested in vie...

Re: Toronto: 1958 Grand Union nominated for designation
As a kid in the 70s/80s, I loved the Mircale Food Mart at Willowdale Plaza for its heroic arch. The lighting in the store I remember as being a bit dimmer, too; more ambient...mood lighting in a supermarket!

The Safeway I used to go to with my dad in the 1970s and early 80s was on Mount Pleasant Road just south of Eglinton. It was in a concrete apartment tower (Sutton Place?) adjacent to an AMC dealer. Parking was underground and there was a multi-level parcel pickup which was quite fascinating. After '...

Hi, The Scottish band Travis just recorded the video for their new song "Closer" in an LA-area supermarket. In one shot, the street number is visible: 2245. From the interior, it reminds me of a 1970s Safeway. Look up Travis and Closer on YouTube to see. Does anyone know what supermarket t...

Miracle Mart in Toronto
Hi, I'm an architect doing some research on strip malls with curvalinear roofs. I remember that plazas with Miracle Marts in 1960s/70s Toronto suburbs had a Quonset-roof type look. Does anyone have photos of such stores? The location I'm thinking of was at Willowdale Plaza at Yonge and Sheppard in t...
