Jamesway
I also recall that Jamesway was somewhat of a W.T. Grants - both of which were never known to be upscale. I remember visiting a Jamesway in, I believe, Port Jervis, New York on a family outing to what we called Upstate. I bought a 45 RPM record there - I do not know how I remember that. It was locat...

Dear Valleyankee: Just for the record and from a person who has no life whatsoever. I was reading an article last month that stated King Kullen Grocery Company bought into Blue Jay Markets in 1966. There were nine (9) Blue Jay Markets in 1966. King Kullen decided to change their look by 1969 and dro...

Halo Anybody Halo?
Dear Group: Have gotten to love this Message Board. For years I have been looking for bottles of Halo Shampoo. I rarely am able to find the golden / menthol type from the 1950's on e-bay but can never find that newer vintage version from the late 1960s - 1970s. Oh, how I loved that deep blue color a...

Dear Turbocxs - the former Harrows WAS the former King Kullen Supermarket. It was build by King Kullen and maintained by them until 1973 - my mother used to shop there. Later, after it closed, it then became Harrows. The 10 foot tower above used to read the King Kullen logo in red neon, right at the...

Plus Supermarkets
Sorry Turbo, I cannot recall ever seeing one of these. However in my mental photo album, which tells the world that I never did have a life, I recall it having light blue lettering, all in capitals, within a rectangular box. I also recall a touch of orange. Am I correct? Is this the one?

A & P
I hated the A & P Store. The one in Southampton was an institution to that town. In fact Turbo - while growing up my first exposure to supermarkets were: A & P, Bohack, IGA, and King Kullen. The later became a Gristedes. Now there is a name for you to search. I do believe though that it was ...

Bohacks "The Meat People"
I sure do remember Bohack. I also worked with a few former Bohack people back when I also worked for King Kullen - in the deli department. Bohack had nothing to do with A & P though. If I recall correctly, almost every town had a Bohack. They were all over Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. We eve...

Big V?
Somewhere in my supermarket memory the name Big V stands. However, I seem also to recall Victory Supermarkets that we would see when traveling to upstate New York. Would this be the same chain? Why does Big V stand out to me?

New York area: Blue Jay Markets
Dear fellow baby boomers from New York: Here is one for you. This should set Edric Floyd and Jeffery55 back a few yards. Do any of you remember Blue Jay Markets? I recall one being in St. James and yet another in Smithtown. Most impressed by there massive blue neon lights. There may have been only f...

Horn & Hardart coffee anyone?
Horn & Hardant was to only automat I was exposed to growing up in New York. I even participated within a feeding in Philadelphia. I still recall the little glass doors that held such delicious looking food items prisoner until you dropped your coin or token into the slot to rescue it. I still ha...

W. T. Grants had a big store in Riverhead, New York. I believe that it closed in the late-1970's, after it built on to double its own size. Today, it is a Wal-Mart. I even remember this W. T. Grants having its own restaurant and snack bar, in two (2) different locations within the same store. In the...
