Re: Hughes market Whittier ca
The intersection of Whittier and Idaho is in La Habra (Orange Co.), not Whittier (L.A. Co.)

Re: Vons Pantry Stores
Just ran across them in this article. From what I can gather, they were a chain of 10 stores that Vons purchased from Cullum Cos. (of Tom Thumb fame...it would ultimately share the Safeway umbrella by 1999) and were converted to the Vons name soon after. The one in Duarte was always a Pantry-- neve...

The former Smith's-turned-Albertson's on Azusa Ave. in Covina also closed recently.

Re: Gino's conversions
I remember when I moved to Northern VA in 1978 I was surprised to find that Gino's were also KFC franchisees. And when Gino's went under, there were surprisingly few remaining KFC stores in the area because of Gino's dominance.

Re: Former Boston Market locations in your area
Following up on my 2008 post about the former Boston Market in Duarte: it's been a Sonic Drive-In for the past couple of years. There's still an operating Boston Market on Arrow Highway in San Dimas, but the only other one I'm aware of in this area (Hastings Ranch neighborhood of Pasadena) recently ...

Re: Pre-CKE Green Burrito Locations
Can't help too much with your questions, but I do know there's also one more stand-alone (i.e., non-Carl's Jr.) Green Burrito--it's in La Habra on Whittier Blvd. I think the Cypress location and this one are the last of the original chain that began in Hawaiian Gardens.

Re: Rasco Tempo Discount Store
I worked for Rasco's for 7 years and, by their standards, was vested in their pension plan. They no longer exist so the funds I put in the plan no longer exist either. If it was a defined benefit pension plan, your benefit was insured by the Pension Benefity Guaranty Corporation (a government agenc...

Re: The Sears Essentals experiment comes to a painful conclu
The Sears Essentials in El Monte (formerly Kmart, and I believe a long-ago regular Sears) is also slated for closure. I believe there are still some Sears Grand format stores in operation-- like the one in Rancho Cucamonga.

Re: JCPenney mall locations
At Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights, CA, the original four anchors were Weinstock's (now Macy's), Liberty House (now Macy's), Penney's, and Sears. Penney's has always occupied one of the two anchor pads that is not on the end of the mall (Weinstocks's/Macy's and Sears have the end locations.)

Re: Chveron Stations Operating as Standard Oil
Amoco was originally Standard Oil Co. of Indiana.

By the way, on that same Wikipedia page, there's a picture of the Standard station in Las Vegas I referred to upthread.

Re: Desert Fashion Plaza, Palm Springs CA
And the other mall in Palm Springs, Palm Springs Mall, isn't doing too well either. Gottschalks died and Vons left, and now Rite-Aid and True Value are moving out. http://www.mydesert.com/article/2011022 ... tting-exit

11471 Long Beach Blvd, Lynwood--underneath the 105 Freeway I was driving up Long Beach Blvd. in Lynwood this afternoon and noticed what appeared to be a former Marina-style Safeway building at approximately this location. It wasn't underneath the freeway, but just south of it (less than 1/8 mile.) ...

Re: MB Center Broadway and West MacArthur Blvd. Oakland, CA
I think I would dispute that-- the GCC Sunvalley I and II opened when that mall opened (in Concord) in 1968.The MB Center was also the home to the first shopping center movie theater in the Bay Area. Theater 70 opened in 1970 on the MacArthur Blvd side (right where Howe St intersect MacArthur).
