Re: Gottschalks
Seems as tho the San Luis Obispo CA site began as Maxwell's. From the photo, it looks as tho Grant's became Mervyn's: http://sloblogs.thetribunenews.com/slovault/2009/04/10/madonna-plaza-opens-1968/ Gottschalks seemed to take over many former locations of other chains. Gottschalks in San Luis Obisp...

Re: Scolaris original stores in CA
The Scolari's in Goleta was built by Jordanos in 1966, sold to Smiths with the rest of Jordano's Santa Barbara area stores in the early 70's, then to Lucky in 1984, Williams Bros. in 1989, and then to Scolaris in 1991. Scolari's operated the store until the lease expired in 2002. There was a former ...

Re: Scolaris original stores in CA
1) The original stores were in: Lompoc (2), Orcutt/Santa Maria (4), Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo (3), Atascadero and Paso Robles. These stores were sold to Lucky in June, 1979. All of these stores were either remodeled and converted to the Lucky Discount Center format by Lucky; several were replac...

1959 Gable Safeway/Vons to close
I noticed an article in the Santa Barbara News Press on 10/3 that the 1959 gable Safeway/Vons at Chapala and Victoria St. in downtown Santa Barbara will close in December. This is the store with the mosaic along Victoria St, and has been discussed in other threads on this board. According to the sto...

Re: Rainbow/Flamingo, Las Vegas
that would make sense to me, but I wonder why Safeway was the owner for the land in 1978 and in 2000, it is very strange... Not as strange as you may think. For example, Safeway may have purchased the land sometime prior to 1978 as a comptetitive or defensive move, and changed ther plans later. Luc...

Re: Rainbow/Flamingo, Las Vegas
According to my store list dated 3/86, 4120 S. Rainbow was a Lucky. I cannot recall the open date, but judging from the store number, I would guess 1979-81.

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
RE: 331 N Glendale Ave, Glendale/CALIFORNIA - ALBERTSONS/WHOLE FOODS Albertsons probably sold this location as part of the American Stores merger. I'll have to check my list. That store was not divested due to American Stores merger. It was operated for a year or so after the merger and was closed ...

Groceteria: You are correct! The Lucky brand was "Golden Crown". I had to to go to my 1979 Lucky Stores annual report to verify. Some other Lucky private lables (from the 1979 annual report): Stadium Green - Garden Supplies Evr Pure: Pool Chemicals Lenita: Hosiery Hi-flo and Kasco: Automot...

Re: old store brands
Lucky/Gemco used Hi-Class on pet foods, Brown Derby on beer, Lucky on HBC/OTC and Spirits, Lady Lee on Grocery, Frozen & Deli, LaTortilla on tortillas, and Harvest Day as 2nd label and bread. This was the case unto well into the 90's, when the Lucky name replaced Lady Lee on most items. Harvest ...

There were nine more stores opened in the old design before the rollout of the new design in 1984/85.

Re: Phoenix Area Gemco stores
The other two Phoenix area stores were located at:
-1815 W. Glendale Avenue, Phoenix
-6719 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix
4320 W. Thunderbird Rd. was retained by Lucky, subsequently used by ASC for back-end accountting and payroll functions.
W. Thomas Road was the newest of the four, opening in late 1982.
