Back for now

Obviously the board is back online after another issue involving bots. I've moved the board to a new host and URL, so I can (a) evaluate this new hosting platform and (b) isolate the message board from the site. I still seem to be getting hammered by the occasional spider/bot attack, but this host s...

Because I was excited after my trip, I hae expanded the Clearwater list and created a new St Petersburg list:

Tampa, Bradenton, and much more to come. I'll also be adding Jacksonville, Orlando, and Savannah at some point soon.

Re: Lincoln Square, 4100 Redwood Rd. Oakland

That Safeway was subjected to a very unfortunate exterior renovation in the 1990s. Maybe the recent renovation helped.

Great photo. Thanks!

Re: Big Chain ad from 1940

That's great. I continue to be fascinated by Big Chain.

I also love the term "master grocery stores." IIRC, First National and Fisher Foods both used the term "master market" on some of their stores in the 1930s/40s as well.

Toronto 2.0

I mentioned in another thread that I was taking a break from Detroit to work on another city for a while. Not so subtle hint: "Another city" translates to "a big update to Toronto, stretching back to 1915 and including lots of new bonus stuff." Look for it after the first of the year. (Sorry. I'm ex...

Digitized annual reports

A 15-year-old project at McGill to digitize a really nice collection of annual reports for Canadian corporations, including a number of grocery chains: https://digital.library.mcgill.ca/hrcorpreports/home.htm The projects seems to have gone dormant and probably will not be expanded, but there's a lo...

Re: Detroit Sneak Preview

These 2200-plus addresses have already involved literally WEEKS of work, two trips to Detroit, hours spent in a library with no HVAC in an August heatwave, and MORE hours individually cross-checking hundreds of missing C.F. Smith locations from 1935 in a colder version of that same library. This is ...

Lucky, 1100 Eddy Street, San Francisco

I've been looking for any sort o photographic evidence of this store since the very early days of this site; it's always been one of my obsessions. The store operated from the late 1960s to the early 1980s and has already been torn down when I started documenting in 1999. Last night, I just happened...

Re: Safeway/Sav-On 3rd & Fairfax

I also have a very heartwarming memory of the uninsured motorist who backed into my rental car in the parking lot when I was photographing the store about nine years ago, but that’s a whole other story…

Re: Safeway/Sav-On 3rd & Fairfax

Great picture! Pretty sure you’re absolutely correct about the location with in the center. I had known about this one for some time based on its listing in a 1964 shopping center guide I have, which also states that the center opened on 15 December 1961 . I also would have guessed it as a Super S c...

Re: Detroit Sneak Preview

Thanks! I'll update as appropriate.

There's still a lot more to come in this section, including photos, maps, and some suburban additions, among other things, but I'm taking a break this weekend.
